Read the Story

King Belshazzar held a huge party for a thousand of his leaders. He brought out the golden vessels that were taken from the temple in Jerusalem. At the party, people praised idols made of gold and silver.

In the same hour, a hand appeared and wrote on the wall. The king's face was changed, and he was afraid. His wise men could not read the writing. The queen told him about Daniel. Daniel came and said, Let your gifts be to yourself.

Daniel reminded the king how God humbled his father Nebuchadnezzar. He said, You, his son, Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart. Then he read the writing. It meant, you are weighed in the balances, and are found wanting. That night the kingdom was given to Darius the Mede.

Found Wanting

Name Date

Read and Think

Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his lords. While he drank wine, he commanded that the golden and silver vessels taken out of the temple in Jerusalem be brought. They drank from them while praising idols of gold, and of silver, of bronze, of iron, of wood, and of stone.

In the same hour, the fingers of a man's hand came out and wrote on the wall of the king's palace. The king was terrified. None of his wise men could read the writing. The queen remembered Daniel, in whom an excellent spirit was found. The king offered him purple clothing and a chain of gold. Daniel answered, Let your gifts be to yourself, and give your rewards to another.

Daniel reminded the king that God had humbled Nebuchadnezzar until he knew that the Most High God rules in the kingdom of men. He said, You, his son, Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart, though you knew all this. The writing said MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN. It meant that God had ended his kingdom. In that night Belshazzar the Chaldean King was slain. Darius the Mede received the kingdom.

Weighed and Found Wanting

Name Date

Read and Think

Daniel 5 moves to a later king, Belshazzar. At a great feast to a thousand of his lords, he called for the golden and silver vessels that had been taken out of the temple in Jerusalem. The king and his guests drank wine from them, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of bronze, of iron, of wood, and of stone. Holy things set apart for God were used to praise idols.

In the same hour, the fingers of a man's hand came out and wrote near the lamp stand on the plaster of the wall. The king was terrified, and his wise men could not read the writing. The queen remembered Daniel, whom Nebuchadnezzar had made master of the magicians. Daniel refused the reward: Let your gifts be to yourself, and give your rewards to another. Nevertheless, I will read the writing to the king.

Daniel first told the story of Daniel 4. God humbled Nebuchadnezzar and taught him who really rules. Then he said, You, his son, Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart, though you knew all this. He added that the king had not glorified the God in whose hand your breath is. The writing read MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN. TEKEL: you are weighed in the balances, and are found wanting. In that night Belshazzar the Chaldean King was slain, and Darius the Mede received the kingdom.
