King Nebuchadnezzar made a big gold statue. He told all the people to bow down to it when the music played. Everyone bowed down, but Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego did not. They worshiped only God.

The king was angry. He said they would be put in a very hot fire. The three friends said that their God was able to save them. They still would not bow. They were put into the fire. Then the king looked and saw four men walking in the fire! The friends came out safe. The fire did not even make them smell like smoke.

Three Friends Stand Firm

Name Date

Read the Story

Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold. A herald said that when the music played, all the people must fall down and worship the golden image. Anyone who did not would be cast into a burning fiery furnace. When the music played, all the people bowed down.

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego did not bow. The king gave them one more chance. They answered, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace. They also said, we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image which you have set up.

The furnace was heated seven times hotter, and the three men were cast into it. Then the king said, Look, I see four men loose, walking in the middle of the fire, and they are unharmed. When the men came out, the fire had no power on their bodies. The smell of fire wasn't even on them. The king praised their God.

But If Not

Name Date

Read and Think

Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold sixty cubits high. He set it up in the plain of Dura, in the province of Babylon. A herald cried that all must fall down and worship it when they heard the music. Whoever doesn't fall down and worship shall be cast into the middle of a burning fiery furnace the same hour.

Some Chaldeans told the king that Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego would not worship. In rage and fury, the king gave them another chance. They answered, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace. Then they added, But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image which you have set up.

The king commanded that the furnace be heated seven times more than usual. The three men were bound and cast in. The flame of the fire killed those men who took them up. Then the king said, Look, I see four men loose, walking in the middle of the fire, and they are unharmed. The appearance of the fourth is like a son of the gods. The men came out, and the hair of their head wasn't singed. The king said their God has sent his angel and delivered his servants who trusted in him.

Daniel 3 · Grade 5

Delivered Through the Fire

Name Date

Read and Think

Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold and gathered all the rulers of the provinces to its dedication. A herald cried aloud that when all kinds of music sounded, all must fall down and worship the golden image. Whoever doesn't fall down and worship shall be cast into the middle of a burning fiery furnace the same hour.

Certain Chaldeans reported that Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego would not worship the image. The king asked, Who is that god who will deliver you out of my hands? Their answer is one of the boldest in Scripture: If it happens, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace; and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image which you have set up. Their faith did not depend on the outcome.

The furnace was heated seven times more than usual, and the flame of the fire killed those men who took them up. Yet the king was astonished. He said, Look, I see four men loose, walking in the middle of the fire, and they are unharmed. The appearance of the fourth is like a son of the gods. The fire had no power on their bodies. The king then said, Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who has sent his angel and delivered his servants who trusted in him. In the New Testament, Hebrews remembers those who through faith quenched the power of fire (Hebrews 11:34).
