The messenger told Daniel about kings who would stand up. There would be a king of the south and a king of the north. For many years, they would fight and make deals. They would even speak lies at one table.

One king would be very proud. He would exalt himself and magnify himself above every god. He would turn against God's holy covenant.

But even in hard times, the people who know their God will be strong and take action. Those who are wise among the people will instruct many. At the end, the proud king will come to his end, and no one will help him.

Read and Think

Daniel 11 is a long message about the future. The messenger said three more kings would stand up in Persia, and then a mighty king would rule with great dominion. His kingdom would be divided toward the four winds. Then a king of the south and a king of the north would struggle for many years.

At one point, both kings would speak lies at one table; but it won't prosper. A proud king would rise. He would exalt himself and magnify himself above every god, and speak marvelous things against the God of gods.

In those times, God's people would face hard days. Yet the people who know their God will be strong and take action. Those who are wise among the people will instruct many. Some would suffer, but their faith would be refined. In the end, the proud king will come to his end, and no one will help him.

The People Who Know Their God

Name Date

Read and Think

Daniel 11 is the longest single message in the book. The messenger tells Daniel of kings who would stand up: three more kings in Persia, then a mighty king who will rule with great dominion, whose kingdom would be divided toward the four winds of the sky. After that, a king of the south and a king of the north would wage war and make alliances for many years.

The text describes plans, treaties, and betrayals. Both these kings would speak lies at one table; but it won't prosper, for the end will still be at the appointed time. A contemptible person would rise and turn his heart against the holy covenant. Later, a king will exalt himself and magnify himself above every god. The details are many, and Christians read them with humility rather than claiming to know every date.

The main lesson for God's people is clear. The people who know their God will be strong and take action. Those who are wise among the people will instruct many. Some would fall, but this would refine them and purify them. However strong the proud king seems, he will come to his end, and no one will help him. God sets the appointed time.

Show What You Know

  1. What would happen to the mighty king's kingdom?

  2. Why would the lies at one table not prosper?

  3. What would the later king do?

  4. What will the people who know their God do?

  5. What would the hard times do for some of the wise?
