Daniel 1 · Grade 4
Faithful in a Foreign Land
Read and Think
Daniel 1 begins with a sad time for Judah. Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it. The Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand. The king chose young men from Judah to serve him. They would learn the language of the Chaldeans. They would eat the king's rich food.
Daniel and his three friends were among them. Each got a new name. But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the king's delicacies, nor with the wine which he drank. God made Daniel find kindness and compassion in the sight of the prince of the eunuchs.
Daniel asked for a test of ten days. He asked for vegetables and water. At the end of ten days, their faces appeared fairer. They looked healthier than the others. God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom, and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.
