Chapter 1Preschool–Grade 5

Colossians 1: Christ Over All

Colossians 1 opens with the names Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus through the will of God, and Timothy our brother, writing to the saints at Colossae. Paul thanks God for their faith and love, which they learned from Epaphras. He prays that they will be filled with the knowledge of God's will and bear fruit in every good work. Paul describes Christ: He is the image of the invisible God, all things were created by him, and in him all things are held together. Through the cross God made peace.

Colossians 2: Rooted in Christ

Colossians 2 tells of Paul's struggle in prayer for the believers, praying that they would be encouraged and joined closely in love. All true wisdom is found in Christ. Paul urges them: As therefore you received Christ Jesus the Lord, walk in him, rooted and built up in him. He warns them not to be led away by empty human ideas. In Christ they are made full. God forgave all their trespasses, nailing the record against them to the cross. So they should not let anyone judge them by human rules.

Colossians 3: Put On Love

Colossians 3 calls believers who were raised together with Christ to seek the things that are above. They are to put away sinful ways such as anger, lying, and harmful speech, and put on the new self. As God's chosen ones, they put on compassion, kindness, humility, and patience, forgiving each other as Christ forgave them. Above all, they walk in love. Paul says: Whatever you do, in word or in deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus. He then gives instructions for households.

Colossians 4: Prayer and Gracious Words

Colossians 4 begins: Masters, give to your servants that which is just and equal, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven. Paul asks the believers to continue in prayer with thanksgiving and to pray for an open door for the word. He tells them to walk in wisdom toward outsiders and let their speech always be with grace. Paul is sending Tychicus and Onesimus with news. He passes on greetings from his fellow workers, including Mark, Luke the beloved physician, and Epaphras, who prays hard for them. Paul signs the greeting with his own hand.
