For Jonathan's Sake

Name Date

Read the Story

David remembered his promise to his friend Jonathan. He asked if anyone was left from Saul's house, so that he could show kindness for Jonathan's sake. A servant named Ziba said that Jonathan still had a son who was lame in his feet.

David brought Mephibosheth to the palace. Mephibosheth fell on his face and called himself a dead dog. David told him not to be afraid. He said he would surely show him kindness for Jonathan his father's sake.

David gave back all the land of Saul to Mephibosheth. Ziba and his sons would farm it. And Mephibosheth would eat at the king's table, like one of the king's sons.

Memory Verse

The Kindness of God

Name Date

Read and Think

Now that David's kingdom was secure, he remembered his covenant with Jonathan. He asked, Is there not yet any of Saul's house, that I may show the kindness of God to him? In those days a new king often removed the old king's family, but David chose kindness.

Ziba told David about Mephibosheth, Jonathan's son, who was lame in both feet and living at Lo Debar. David sent for him. Mephibosheth bowed low and called himself a dead dog, unworthy of the king's notice.

David told him not to be afraid. He restored Saul's land to him and assigned Ziba's household to work it. Best of all, Mephibosheth would eat bread at the king's table continually, just like one of the king's sons. He lived in Jerusalem from then on.

Show What You Know

  1. What kind of kindness did David want to show?

  2. Where was Mephibosheth living?

  3. How did Mephibosheth see himself?

  4. Who would work Mephibosheth's land?

Think About It

  1. David showed kindness to someone who could give nothing back. Who could you show that kind of kindness to?

  2. Mephibosheth was welcomed like a son. How does that picture God's welcome to us?

Memory Verse

David said to him, “Don’t be afraid, for I will surely show you kindness for Jonathan your father’s sake, and will restore to you all the land of Saul your father. You will eat bread at my table continually.”

A Place at the King's Table

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 9 turns from battles to a quiet act of grace. David asked whether anyone remained of Saul's house so that he could show kindness for Jonathan's sake. When he repeated the question, he called it the kindness of God, showing that he wanted to treat others the way God had treated him.

Ziba, a former servant of Saul, reported that Jonathan's son Mephibosheth was still alive, lame in his feet, living at the house of Machir in Lo Debar. When Mephibosheth arrived, he fell on his face. He may have feared that David meant to harm him. He described himself as a dead dog.

David's first words were, Don't be afraid. He promised to restore all of Saul's land and to have Ziba's family farm it. He also gave Mephibosheth a permanent place at the royal table, as one of the king's sons. The chapter ends by noting that Mephibosheth ate continually at the king's table and was lame in both his feet. The honor did not depend on his ability, but on David's promise and grace.

  2. Where was Mephibosheth living?

  3. What were David's first words to Mephibosheth?

  4. What did David promise to restore?
