2 Samuel 9 · Grade 4
The Kindness of God
Read and Think
Now that David's kingdom was secure, he remembered his covenant with Jonathan. He asked, Is there not yet any of Saul's house, that I may show the kindness of God to him? In those days a new king often removed the old king's family, but David chose kindness.
Ziba told David about Mephibosheth, Jonathan's son, who was lame in both feet and living at Lo Debar. David sent for him. Mephibosheth bowed low and called himself a dead dog, unworthy of the king's notice.
David told him not to be afraid. He restored Saul's land to him and assigned Ziba's household to work it. Best of all, Mephibosheth would eat bread at the king's table continually, just like one of the king's sons. He lived in Jerusalem from then on.
Show What You Know
What kind of kindness did David want to show?
Where was Mephibosheth living?
How did Mephibosheth see himself?
Who would work Mephibosheth's land?
Think About It
David showed kindness to someone who could give nothing back. Who could you show that kind of kindness to?
Mephibosheth was welcomed like a son. How does that picture God's welcome to us?
Memory Verse
“David said to him, “Don’t be afraid, for I will surely show you kindness for Jonathan your father’s sake, and will restore to you all the land of Saul your father. You will eat bread at my table continually.””

For families: talk about these together.
- How is Mephibosheth at the king's table a picture of grace?
- How can you make a person who feels small feel welcome?
