A Righteous King

Read and Think

God had promised David rest from his enemies. Now we see God keep that promise. David won battles on every side. Two times the writer says the same key line: the Lord gave victory to David wherever he went.

David did not keep the riches for himself. Gold shields and gifts from a king all went to the Lord. David saw each win as God's gift, not his own work.

At home, David ruled with justice and righteousness for all his people. Joab led the army. Jehoshaphat kept the records. A good king needs good helpers.

Justice and Righteousness

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 8 summarizes David's military success. After the covenant of chapter 7, God gave David rest by subduing the Philistines to the west, Moab to the east, Zobah and Syria to the north, and Edom to the south. Twice the text gives the reason: the Lord gave victory to David wherever he went.

The treasures that poured in were not kept as personal riches. David dedicated to the Lord the gold shields of Hadadezer's servants, the bronze from his cities, and the vessels of silver, gold, and bronze sent by Toi of Hamath. He treated all of it as belonging to God.

The chapter ends with the heart of good kingship: David executed justice and righteousness for all his people. Strength abroad was matched by fairness at home. David organized faithful officials to help him lead: Joab, Jehoshaphat, Zadok, Ahimelech, Seraiah, and Benaiah, while his sons served as chief officials.

  1. What does the text give as the reason for David's success?

  3. What was the heart of good kingship?

  4. How was strength abroad matched?
