God had given David rest from his enemies. David lived in a house of cedar, but God's ark was inside curtains. David told Nathan the prophet he wanted to build a house for God.

A House That Lasts Forever

Name Date

Read and Think

When David was settled in his cedar palace, he felt it was not right that God's ark dwelled within curtains. Nathan first told him to do all that was in his heart. But that night God gave Nathan a different message for David.

God said He had never asked for a house of cedar. He had been with David wherever he went. Now God would make David a great name and give Israel a place to live. Then came a surprise: the Lord would make David a house. David's offspring would build a house for God's name, and God would establish his kingdom forever. God said, I will be his father, and he will be my son.

David responded with humble wonder. He asked, Who am I, Lord Yahweh? He praised God's greatness and asked Him to do as He had spoken. In the New Testament, Hebrews 1:5 applies the words I will be to him a Father, and he will be to me a Son to Jesus.

The Covenant with David

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 7 is one of the most important chapters in the Old Testament. David, at rest from his enemies and living in a cedar house, wanted to build a permanent house for the ark. Nathan approved, but God corrected them both. The Lord had walked with Israel in a tent and had never asked any leader for a house of cedar.

Instead, God promised to build David a house, meaning a royal family line. He reminded David that He had taken him from the sheep pen to be prince over Israel. When David died, God would raise up his offspring, who would build a house for God's name. God would be a father to him; if he did wrong, God would discipline him, but His loving kindness would not depart from him as it did from Saul. David's house, kingdom, and throne would be established forever.

David went in and sat before the Lord. His prayer is full of wonder: Who am I, Lord Yahweh, and what is my house, that you have brought me this far? He confessed that there is no one like God, that God's words are truth, and he asked God to confirm His promise forever. In the New Testament, Luke 1:32 says of Jesus, The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and Hebrews 1:5 applies the words I will be to him a Father, and he will be to me a Son to Jesus.
