With All His Might

Name Date

Read the Story

David gathered thirty thousand chosen men to bring God's ark to Jerusalem. They set it on a new cart.

At the threshing floor of Nacon, the cattle stumbled, and Uzzah took hold of the ark. God's anger burned against Uzzah, and he died there. David was afraid of the Lord that day. He took the ark to the house of Obed-Edom, and the Lord blessed Obed-Edom and all his house.

When David heard about the blessing, he brought the ark into David's city with joy. He danced before the Lord with all his might. Michal, Saul's daughter, saw him and despised him in her heart. But David said he was celebrating before the Lord, who had chosen him.

God Is Holy and Good

Name Date

Read and Think

The ark of the covenant was the sign of God's presence with Israel. David wanted it in Jerusalem, so he gathered thirty thousand men. They placed the ark on a new cart, and the people celebrated with music.

When the cattle stumbled, Uzzah reached out and took hold of the ark. God struck him for his error, and he died by the ark. David was both displeased and afraid. He wondered how the ark could ever come to him, so he left it with Obed-Edom the Gittite.

For three months the Lord blessed Obed-Edom's whole household. David then brought the ark up with joy, offering sacrifices after the first six steps. He danced before the Lord wearing a linen ephod, blessed the people, and gave everyone bread, dates, and raisins. Michal despised him, but David said he would celebrate before the Lord.

The Ark Comes to David's City

Name Date

Read and Think

Once Jerusalem was secure, David turned to worship. He wanted the ark of God, called by the name of the Lord of Armies who sits above the cherubim, to be at the center of the nation's life. With thirty thousand chosen men and joyful music, he brought it out of Abinadab's house on a new cart.

The plan was well meant, but it went badly. At the threshing floor of Nacon, when the oxen stumbled, Uzzah grabbed the ark, and God struck him for his error. David was angry and afraid. He named the place Perez Uzzah and left the ark at the house of Obed-Edom. There the ark brought blessing instead of judgment: the Lord blessed Obed-Edom and all his house.

Three months later David tried again, and this time the ark was carried by those who bore it. After six paces he offered sacrifices. David, clothed in a linen ephod, danced before the Lord with all his might, while the people shouted and blew trumpets. Michal looked down from a window and despised him. David answered that he danced before the Lord who had chosen him, and that he was willing to be humble in his own sight for the Lord's sake.
