2 Samuel 6 · Grade 5
The Ark Comes to David's City
Read and Think
Once Jerusalem was secure, David turned to worship. He wanted the ark of God, called by the name of the Lord of Armies who sits above the cherubim, to be at the center of the nation's life. With thirty thousand chosen men and joyful music, he brought it out of Abinadab's house on a new cart.
The plan was well meant, but it went badly. At the threshing floor of Nacon, when the oxen stumbled, Uzzah grabbed the ark, and God struck him for his error. David was angry and afraid. He named the place Perez Uzzah and left the ark at the house of Obed-Edom. There the ark brought blessing instead of judgment: the Lord blessed Obed-Edom and all his house.
Three months later David tried again, and this time the ark was carried by those who bore it. After six paces he offered sacrifices. David, clothed in a linen ephod, danced before the Lord with all his might, while the people shouted and blew trumpets. Michal looked down from a window and despised him. David answered that he danced before the Lord who had chosen him, and that he was willing to be humble in his own sight for the Lord's sake.

Think About It
God is both holy and generous: Uzzah's death and Obed-Edom's blessing come from the same ark. How can both truths shape your view of God?
David cared more about honoring God than about looking dignified. When might you need to choose God's approval over people's opinions?
