David's City

Name Date

Read the Story

All the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron. They reminded him that the Lord had said he would be shepherd of His people. The elders made a covenant with David and anointed him king over Israel. David was thirty years old, and he reigned forty years.

David and his men went to Jerusalem. The people there said David could not come in. But David took the stronghold of Zion and called it David's city. Hiram king of Tyre sent cedar trees and workers to build David a house.

Twice the Philistines came to fight. Each time, David asked the Lord first. The second time, God told him to circle behind them and wait by the mulberry trees. When David heard the sound of marching in the treetops, he knew the Lord had gone out before him.

“David grew greater and greater, for Yahweh, the God of Armies, was with him.”

The Lord Was with Him

Name Date

Read and Think

After seven and a half years in Hebron, David became king over all Israel. The tribes said, in effect, that they were his own family and that the Lord had chosen him to shepherd Israel. The elders made a covenant with him before the Lord and anointed him.

David captured the stronghold of Zion from the Jebusites, who had boasted that he could never get in. Jerusalem became David's city. David grew greater and greater, and the chapter gives the reason: the Lord, the God of Armies, was with him. David understood that God had raised him up for the sake of His people Israel.

The Philistines came up to the valley of Rephaim. David asked God whether to attack, and God promised victory. When they came again, David asked again instead of assuming the answer would be the same. This time God gave a new plan: wait by the mulberry trees until you hear marching in the treetops.

  2. Who boasted that David could never get in?

Shepherd of My People

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 5 marks a turning point. The tribes of Israel came to Hebron and gave three reasons to accept David: he was their bone and flesh, he had led Israel in battle even under Saul, and the Lord had said he would be shepherd and prince over Israel. The elders made a covenant with David before the Lord and anointed him. He was thirty years old and reigned forty years in all.

David then took Jerusalem, a city the Jebusites thought could not be captured. He made the stronghold of Zion his home and called it David's city. Hiram king of Tyre sent cedar, carpenters, and masons to build him a house. The writer explains David's success plainly: he grew greater and greater, for the Lord, the God of Armies, was with him. David perceived that God had exalted his kingdom for his people Israel's sake.

When the Philistines heard of the new king, they attacked twice in the valley of Rephaim. Both times David inquired of the Lord. The first time God said to go up, and David named the place Baal Perazim, saying the Lord had broken his enemies like the breach of waters. The second time God gave a different strategy. David obeyed exactly, and the Lord went out before him.
