His Mercies Are Great

Name Date

Read the Story

David told Joab to go through all the tribes of Israel and count the people. Joab asked why the king wanted this, but David insisted. After nine months and twenty days, Joab came back with the numbers.

Then David's heart struck him. He said to the Lord, I have sinned greatly. The prophet Gad brought three choices of judgment. David said he was in distress, but he wanted to fall into Yahweh's hand, for His mercies are great. A pestilence came, and seventy thousand men died. When the angel reached toward Jerusalem, the Lord said, It is enough.

David saw the angel and prayed that God's hand would be against him and not against the people. Gad told David to build an altar on the threshing floor of Araunah. Araunah offered it as a gift, but David said he would not offer to Yahweh what cost him nothing. He paid fifty shekels of silver, built the altar, and the plague was removed.

An Offering That Costs

Name Date

Read and Think

The book ends with one more failure and one more mercy. David ordered a census of the fighting men. Joab objected, but the king's word prevailed. The count took nine months and twenty days. Afterward David's heart struck him, and he confessed that he had sinned greatly and acted very foolishly.

Through Gad the seer, God offered three judgments: famine, fleeing from enemies, or three days of pestilence. David said, Let us fall now into Yahweh's hand, for his mercies are great. The pestilence took seventy thousand men. But when the angel stretched out his hand toward Jerusalem, Yahweh relented and said, It is enough.

David pleaded for the people, asking that God's hand be against him and his father's house instead, since the people were like sheep. Gad told him to build an altar at the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite. Araunah offered the place, the oxen, and the wood for free. David refused: he would not offer burnt offerings that cost him nothing. He bought it, built an altar, and Yahweh was entreated for the land.

Into the Hand of the Lord

Name Date

Read and Think

Second Samuel closes with a story of sin, judgment, intercession, and worship. The text says Yahweh's anger burned against Israel, and David was moved to count Israel and Judah. Joab objected, asking why the king delighted in this, but he was overruled. After nine months and twenty days, the count was 800,000 fighting men in Israel and 500,000 in Judah.

Then David's heart struck him. He confessed, I have sinned greatly in that which I have done, and asked Yahweh to put away his iniquity. Through Gad the seer, God offered three judgments. David's answer reveals his faith: I am in distress. Let us fall now into Yahweh's hand, for his mercies are great. Let me not fall into man's hand. A pestilence followed, and seventy thousand died. As the angel stretched out his hand over Jerusalem, Yahweh relented and said, It is enough. Now withdraw your hand.

Seeing the angel at the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite, David interceded: he had sinned, but what had these sheep done? Let God's hand fall on him and his father's house. Gad directed him to build an altar there. Araunah offered everything freely, but David insisted on paying, saying he would not offer burnt offerings to Yahweh his God which cost him nothing. He bought the threshing floor and oxen for fifty shekels of silver, built an altar, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. Yahweh was entreated for the land, and the plague was removed. The book ends with mercy answering repentance and worship.
