Read the Story

For three years there was a famine. That means there was not enough food. David went to God and asked why.

God told David that Saul had done wrong to the Gibeonites. Israel had promised to keep them safe. David worked to make it right. He also buried the bones of Saul and Jonathan in their family's tomb. Then God answered prayer for the land.

Later there were battles with giants from Gath. One giant had six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot. David's men won. One day David was very tired. His friend Abishai helped him.

Making Things Right

Name Date

Read the Story

In David's days there was a famine for three years, year after year. David sought the face of the Lord. The Lord said it was because Saul had put the Gibeonites to death. Long ago, Israel had sworn an oath to let the Gibeonites live, but Saul broke it.

David asked the Gibeonites how he could make it right. They asked for seven of Saul's descendants, and David handed them over. They were put to death. David spared Mephibosheth because of his oath with Jonathan. Rizpah, the mother of two of the men, stayed on a rock and guarded their bodies from birds and animals.

When David heard what Rizpah had done, he brought the bones of Saul and Jonathan and buried them in Benjamin, in the tomb of Saul's father Kish. After that, God answered prayer for the land. Later David's men defeated four giants from Gath.

Memory Verse

Oaths and Answered Prayer

Name Date

Read and Think

A three-year famine drove David to seek the face of the Lord. God revealed that it was because of Saul and his bloody house, which had killed the Gibeonites. Israel had sworn to protect them, but Saul, in his zeal, tried to destroy them. Broken oaths matter to God.

David asked the Gibeonites what would make atonement. They did not want silver or gold; they asked for seven of Saul's descendants, and these were put to death. David kept his own oath and spared Mephibosheth, Jonathan's son. Rizpah, Saul's concubine and mother of two of the men, spread sackcloth on a rock and guarded their bodies from the beginning of harvest until water poured on them from the sky.

Moved by her devotion, David gathered the bones of Saul and Jonathan, with the others, and buried them honorably in the tomb of Kish. After that, God answered prayer for the land. The chapter ends with stories of David's men defeating giants from Gath. When David grew faint in battle, Abishai rescued him, and his men told him not to go out to battle again, so he would not quench the lamp of Israel.

The Lamp of Israel

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapters 21 to 24 form a closing section that looks back over David's reign. The first story begins with a three-year famine. David sought the face of Yahweh and learned that the cause was Saul's slaughter of the Gibeonites, a people the children of Israel had sworn to spare. Saul had broken that oath in his zeal for Israel and Judah, and the guilt still rested on the land.

David asked the Gibeonites how he could make atonement so they would bless Yahweh's inheritance. They refused silver or gold and asked for seven of Saul's descendants, who were put to death at Gibeah. David spared Mephibosheth because of Yahweh's oath between David and Jonathan. Rizpah, mother of two of the men, kept a long vigil on the rock, refusing to let birds by day or animals by night disturb the bodies until water poured on them from the sky.

When David heard of her faithfulness, he gathered the bones of Saul and Jonathan from Jabesh Gilead and buried them with the others in the tomb of Kish in Benjamin. Only then does the text say that God answered prayer for the land. The chapter closes with four battles against descendants of the giant in Gath, including a giant with six fingers and six toes. When David grew weary, Abishai saved him, and the men swore that David must not go out to battle again, lest he quench the lamp of Israel.
