A City Saved by Wisdom

Name Date

Read the Story

A wicked man named Sheba blew a trumpet and said, We have no portion in David. All the men of Israel followed Sheba, but the men of Judah stayed with their king.

David told Amasa to call the men of Judah within three days, but Amasa took too long. So David sent Abishai and Joab after Sheba. When they met Amasa, Joab killed him. Then Joab chased Sheba to the city of Abel and built a mound against the wall.

A wise woman cried out from the city and asked to speak with Joab. She said she was among those who are peaceable and faithful in Israel. Why destroy a city that is a mother in Israel? Joab said he wanted only Sheba. The woman went to her people in her wisdom, and they gave up Sheba.

Peaceable and Faithful

Name Date

Read and Think

The quarrel at the end of chapter 19 turned into a new revolt. Sheba, called a wicked fellow, blew the trumpet and cried that Israel had no portion in David. The men of Israel followed him, while Judah stayed loyal from the Jordan to Jerusalem.

David told Amasa, his new commander, to gather Judah in three days. When Amasa was late, David sent Abishai with Joab's men. At Gibeon, Joab greeted Amasa as a brother and then killed him, taking back command by violence. The army followed Joab after Sheba to Abel of Beth Maacah.

As Joab's men battered the wall, a wise woman called out. She reminded Joab that Abel was known for wise counsel and said she was among the peaceable and faithful in Israel. Why swallow up Yahweh's inheritance? Joab answered, far be it from him to destroy. He wanted only Sheba. Through her wisdom the city gave up the rebel, and many lives were spared.

A Mother in Israel

Name Date

Read and Think

The rivalry between Israel and Judah quickly produced another revolt. Sheba son of Bichri, a Benjamite described as a wicked fellow, sounded the trumpet with a slogan that rejected David: no portion in David, no inheritance in the son of Jesse, every man to his tents. The northern tribes followed him, but Judah stayed with the king.

David feared Sheba might do more harm than Absalom. He ordered Amasa to gather Judah within three days, but Amasa delayed. Abishai was sent with Joab's men. At the great stone in Gibeon, Joab asked Amasa, Is it well with you, my brother? and then killed him. The man David had appointed was removed, and Joab resumed control by treachery, just as he had done with Abner.

Joab besieged Sheba in Abel of Beth Maacah. A wise woman called out from the city. She recalled the saying that people should ask counsel at Abel, described herself as peaceable and faithful in Israel, and asked why Joab would destroy a city and a mother in Israel and swallow up Yahweh's inheritance. Joab insisted he wanted only Sheba. The woman went to all the people in her wisdom, and they put Sheba to death. Joab blew the trumpet, and the siege ended. The chapter closes with a list of David's officials, showing order restored.
