2 Samuel 20 · Grade 3
A City Saved by Wisdom
Read the Story
A wicked man named Sheba blew a trumpet and said, We have no portion in David. All the men of Israel followed Sheba, but the men of Judah stayed with their king.
David told Amasa to call the men of Judah within three days, but Amasa took too long. So David sent Abishai and Joab after Sheba. When they met Amasa, Joab killed him. Then Joab chased Sheba to the city of Abel and built a mound against the wall.
A wise woman cried out from the city and asked to speak with Joab. She said she was among those who are peaceable and faithful in Israel. Why destroy a city that is a mother in Israel? Joab said he wanted only Sheba. The woman went to her people in her wisdom, and they gave up Sheba.
Memory Verse
“I am among those who are peaceable and faithful in Israel. You seek to destroy a city and a mother in Israel. Why will you swallow up Yahweh’s inheritance?””
