Cursed on the Road

Name Date

Read the Story

Ziba was Mephibosheth's servant. He met David with donkeys. They carried bread, raisins, fruit, and wine. Ziba said Mephibosheth stayed in Jerusalem to get back his grandfather's kingdom. David believed Ziba. He gave Ziba all of Mephibosheth's things.

Then Shimei came out. He was from Saul's family. He cursed David and threw stones at him. Abishai wanted to stop Shimei by force. But David said, Leave him alone. He said maybe the Lord would look on the wrong done to him. Maybe the Lord would repay him good for the cursing.

David's people arrived weary and refreshed themselves. Meanwhile Absalom came to Jerusalem. Hushai greeted him with Long live the king. Absalom asked why he did not go with his friend David. Hushai said he would serve the one the Lord and the people had chosen.

Memory Verse

It may be that Yahweh will look on the wrong done to me, and that Yahweh will repay me good for the cursing of me today.”

Repay Me Good

Name Date

Read and Think

As David fled, Ziba came with food and a story. He said Mephibosheth was waiting in Jerusalem. He said Mephibosheth hoped to get back his grandfather's kingdom. David gave Ziba all that was Mephibosheth's. He did not hear Mephibosheth's side. Later we will see that Ziba's story may not be true.

Next Shimei, of Saul's house, cursed David, calling him a man of blood and throwing stones. Abishai offered to kill him. David refused. He said that if his own son was seeking his life, he should not be surprised by this Benjamite. David chose to leave the matter with God, hoping that the Lord would see his distress and repay him good for the cursing.

In Jerusalem, Hushai greeted Absalom as king. Absalom asked why he did not go with his friend. Hushai said he would serve the one the Lord and Israel had chosen. Then Absalom asked Ahithophel for advice. People treated his advice as if they had asked the word of God. But his advice to Absalom was evil. It was meant to end all hope of peace with David.

Bearing Insults with Trust

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 16 shows David at his lowest point and also some of his best responses. Ziba met him beyond the top of the Mount of Olives with two saddled donkeys loaded with bread, raisins, summer fruits, and wine. When asked about Mephibosheth, Ziba claimed that he had stayed behind hoping Israel would restore his grandfather's kingdom to him. David, weary and hurried, transferred all of Mephibosheth's property to Ziba without investigation.

At Bahurim, Shimei of Saul's family followed along the hillside, cursing David as a man of blood and throwing stones and dust. He claimed the Lord was repaying David for the blood of Saul's house. Abishai offered to kill him. David's answer was humble: his own son sought his life, so why be surprised at a Benjamite? Perhaps the Lord had told him to curse. Let him alone. David hoped that the Lord would look on the wrong done to him and repay him good for the cursing.

Meanwhile Absalom entered Jerusalem. Hushai cleverly greeted him, saying he would serve the one whom Yahweh and the people had chosen, wording that Absalom took as loyalty. Absalom then turned to Ahithophel, whose counsel in those days was treated like an inquiry of the word of God. Ahithophel's advice was meant to make Absalom odious to his father beyond any hope of peace. The counselor's wisdom had become a tool of wickedness.
