2 Samuel 15 · Grade 4
Faith on the Road Out
Read and Think
Absalom worked slowly to win the people. He rose early to stand by the gate, met everyone who came for judgment, and told them no one would hear their case. He hinted that things would be better if he were judge. When people bowed, he took their hands and kissed them. In this way he stole the hearts of the men of Israel.
Using a vow as an excuse, Absalom went to Hebron and had trumpets announce him as king. Even Ahithophel, David's counselor, joined him. David chose to flee rather than let Jerusalem be struck with the sword. Ittai, a foreigner who had only recently arrived, swore loyalty to David whether for death or for life.
When Zadok brought the ark, David sent it back. He would not use the ark as a lucky charm. He said that if God had no delight in him, God could do to him as seemed good. David climbed the Mount of Olives barefoot and weeping. When he heard Ahithophel had joined Absalom, he prayed. Then he sent Hushai back to defeat Ahithophel's counsel.
