Sin Spreads in David's House

Name Date

Read the Story

Amnon, David's oldest son, wanted his half-sister Tamar. A subtle friend named Jonadab gave him a sly plan. Amnon pretended to be sick, and David sent Tamar to make food for him. Tamar said, No, my brother, do not force me! But Amnon would not listen to her voice. He forced her, which was a terrible wrong.

Tamar tore her colorful robe, put ashes on her head, and went away crying aloud. Absalom told her to stay in his house, and she remained there full of sorrow. When King David heard, he was very angry, but the Bible does not say he did anything to Amnon.

Absalom hated Amnon. After two full years he invited all the king's sons to a feast with his sheep shearers. There his servants killed Amnon. The other sons fled on their mules. Absalom fled to Geshur and stayed three years. David mourned for his son every day.

Anger Without Justice

Name Date

Read and Think

This chapter shows Nathan's warning coming true: trouble arose inside David's own house. Amnon, David's son, wanted his half-sister Tamar. With advice from his subtle friend Jonadab, he pretended to be sick so that Tamar would be sent to him. Tamar begged him to stop and said that no such thing ought to be done in Israel. But Amnon would not listen, and he forced her. The blame belonged to Amnon, not to Tamar.

Tamar mourned openly, and Absalom took her into his house, where she remained desolate. King David was very angry, yet the text records no action against Amnon. Absalom said nothing to Amnon, good or bad, but he hated him.

Two years later, Absalom held a sheep-shearing feast and pressed the king to let Amnon come. There Absalom's servants killed Amnon at his command. The news first came to David as a report that all his sons were dead, and he tore his clothes and lay on the ground. Jonadab told him only Amnon had died. Absalom fled to Geshur for three years, and David longed to go out to him.

The Sword in David's House

Name Date

Read and Think

Second Samuel 13 shows the beginning of the sorrows Nathan foretold. Amnon, the king's firstborn, allowed a selfish desire to rule him. His cousin Jonadab, described as a very subtle man, devised a plan to get Tamar alone. Tamar spoke with courage and wisdom. She told Amnon not to force her, called the deed folly, warned that he would be counted among the fools in Israel, and asked him to speak to the king instead. He would not listen, and he forced her. The text makes clear that Amnon was the wrongdoer.

Tamar tore her royal robe and cried aloud. She remained desolate in Absalom's house. David was very angry, but he did not bring Amnon to justice. Absalom hid his hatred for two full years.

At a sheep-shearing feast in Baal Hazor, Absalom ordered his servants to strike Amnon when his heart was merry with wine, and they killed him. A false report reached David that all his sons were slain, and he tore his garments. Jonadab, who had helped begin the tragedy, now explained that only Amnon was dead. Absalom fled to Talmai king of Geshur, his grandfather by his mother, and stayed three years. David mourned for his son every day, and in time he longed to go out to Absalom.

Show What You Know

  1. How did Tamar show courage and wisdom?

  2. What did Amnon's desire turn into?

  3. What did David fail to do?

  4. What false report reached David?

  5. Who explained that only Amnon was dead?
