David Confesses

Name Date

Read the Story

The Lord sent Nathan to David. Nathan told about two men in one city. The rich man had very many flocks. The poor man had only one little ewe lamb that grew up with his children. When a traveler came, the rich man took the poor man's lamb to make a meal.

David's anger burned hot. He said the man must pay back four times as much. Nathan said, You are the man! God had given David so much, yet David had taken Uriah's wife and had Uriah killed in battle. Nathan said trouble would come in David's own house.

David said, I have sinned against the Lord. Nathan said the Lord had put away his sin, and David would not die. But the baby became sick. David prayed and fasted. When the child died, David got up, washed, and worshiped in the Lord's house. Later Bathsheba had a son, Solomon, and the Lord loved him.

Forgiven but Not Without Sorrow

Name Date

Read and Think

God did not leave David hiding his sin. He sent Nathan the prophet with a story. A rich man with many flocks refused to take one of his own animals for a traveler. Instead he took the only lamb of a poor man, a lamb the poor man loved like a daughter.

David burned with anger and said the man deserved to die. Nathan answered, You are the man! Speaking for God, Nathan reminded David of all God had given him and asked why he had despised the Lord's word. Because David had struck Uriah and taken his wife, the sword would never depart from his house.

David did not make excuses. He said, I have sinned against Yahweh. Nathan replied that the Lord had put away his sin. Yet the consequences remained. The child became very sick. David fasted and lay on the ground, hoping God would be gracious. After the child died, David worshiped. He said he would go to the child, but the child would not return to him. God then gave David and Bathsheba Solomon, and sent word through Nathan that the Lord loved him.

You Are the Man

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 12 shows God's faithful pursuit of a guilty king. Yahweh sent Nathan, who told a story that drew out David's sense of justice. A rich man spared his own flocks and seized a poor man's only ewe lamb, which ate from his food, drank from his cup, and lay in his bosom. David angrily declared that the man deserved to die and must restore the lamb fourfold, because he had no pity.

Nathan's reply was four words: You are the man! God had anointed David, delivered him from Saul, and given him much, and would have given more. Yet David had despised the Lord's word by striking Uriah with the sword and taking his wife. Therefore the sword would never depart from David's house, and evil would rise up against him from within his own family.

David's response was immediate: I have sinned against Yahweh. Nathan announced that the Lord had put away his sin and that David would not die, but the child would die because David had given great occasion to the enemies of Yahweh to blaspheme. David pleaded with God, fasting and lying on the earth for seven days. When the child died, David rose, worshiped in the house of the Lord, and accepted God's will. Later Solomon was born, the Lord loved him, and through Nathan the prophet he was named Jedidiah. The chapter closes with Joab and David taking Rabbah.
