What David Did Displeased the Lord

Name Date

Read the Story

At the time when kings go out to war, David sent Joab and the army to fight the Ammonites. But David stayed at Jerusalem.

David saw a woman named Bathsheba. She was the wife of Uriah the Hittite, one of David's soldiers. David took her to his house, which was wrong.

David called Uriah home, but Uriah would not go to his own house while the army was camping in the field. So David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it with Uriah. It said to put Uriah where the battle was hottest. Uriah died. After Bathsheba mourned, David married her, and she had a son. But the thing David had done displeased the Lord.

A King Who Fell

Name Date

Read and Think

At the time when kings go out to battle, David sent Joab and all Israel to fight, but David stayed at Jerusalem. One evening he saw Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah the Hittite. Even after he learned she was married, David sent for her and took her to his house. This was adultery, a sin against God and against Uriah.

When Bathsheba told David she was with child, David tried to hide his sin. He called Uriah home from the battle and urged him to go to his house. But Uriah refused. He said the ark, Israel, and Judah were staying in tents, so he would not go home to eat and drink. Uriah, a foreign soldier, showed more loyalty than the king.

David then wrote a letter to Joab, carried by Uriah himself, ordering that Uriah be placed in the fiercest battle and left alone. Uriah died. When the mourning was over, David brought Bathsheba into his house as his wife. The chapter ends with a short but serious line: the thing that David had done displeased Yahweh.

  2. What sin did David commit with Bathsheba?

The Thing David Had Done

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 11 is a turning point in David's life. At the time when kings go out to battle, David sent Joab and the army, but he remained at Jerusalem. From his roof he saw Bathsheba. He inquired and learned she was the wife of Uriah the Hittite, one of his own soldiers. Still he sent for her and took her. The Bible names this plainly as sin; it was adultery.

When Bathsheba sent word that she was with child, David tried to cover what he had done. He brought Uriah home and twice tried to send him to his own house. Uriah refused. He said that the ark, Israel, and Judah were staying in tents, and Joab and the soldiers were camping in the open field, so he would not go home. The foreigner Uriah displayed the integrity that the king had abandoned.

Then David arranged Uriah's death. He wrote to Joab, sending the letter by Uriah's own hand, and ordered him placed at the front of the hottest battle and then left alone. Uriah died, along with other soldiers. David sent Joab a message not to let the thing displease him. Yet the chapter closes with God's verdict: the thing that David had done displeased Yahweh. People might look away, but God saw.

Show What You Know

  1. What did David learn before sending for Bathsheba?

  2. How did David try to cover his sin?

  3. How did Uriah display integrity?

  4. How did David arrange Uriah's death?

  5. What is God's verdict at the end of the chapter?
