Be Courageous

Read the Story

When the king of Ammon died, David wanted to show kindness to his son Hanun, because his father had shown kindness to David. David sent servants to comfort him.

The princes of Ammon told Hanun that David's men had come to spy out the city. Hanun shaved off half of each man's beard. He cut their clothes too. The men were very ashamed. David told them to stay at Jericho until their beards grew back.

The Ammonites hired Syrian soldiers. Joab saw armies in front and behind. He gave part of the army to his brother Abishai. Joab said, Be courageous, and let's be strong for our people and for the cities of our God. Israel won, and the Syrians were afraid to help Ammon anymore.

Strong for Our People

Name Date

Read and Think

David tried to repay kindness with kindness. When Nahash king of Ammon died, David sent servants to comfort his son Hanun. But Hanun's princes suspected that David had sent spies, not comforters.

Hanun believed them. He shamed David's servants by shaving half their beards and cutting their garments. David cared for his men and told them to wait at Jericho until their beards had grown. The Ammonites knew they had become odious to David, so they hired thousands of Syrian soldiers.

Joab found himself between two armies. He chose the best men to face the Syrians and gave the rest to Abishai to face Ammon. He said they would help each other. Then Joab said, Be courageous, and let's be strong for our people and for the cities of our God; and may Yahweh do what seems good to him. The Syrians fled, and later David defeated them again.

May the Lord Do What Seems Good

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 10 begins with an act of goodwill. Nahash king of Ammon had shown kindness to David, so when Nahash died, David sent messengers to comfort his son Hanun. The Ammonite princes planted suspicion, saying David's servants had come to search the city and overthrow it.

Hanun humiliated the messengers, shaving off half of each man's beard and cutting their garments in the middle. The men were greatly ashamed, and David protected their dignity by letting them stay at Jericho until their beards grew back. Realizing they had offended David, the Ammonites hired Syrian forces from Beth Rehob, Zobah, Maacah, and Tob.

Joab faced battle on two fronts. He divided the army with his brother Abishai and agreed that whichever side was stronger would help the other. His words show courage joined with faith: be courageous, be strong for the people and for the cities of God, and may Yahweh do what seems good to him. The Syrians and Ammonites fled. When Hadadezer gathered the Syrians again, David crossed the Jordan and defeated them, and the kings who served Hadadezer made peace with Israel.
