2 Samuel 10 · Grade 4
Strong for Our People
Read and Think
David tried to repay kindness with kindness. When Nahash king of Ammon died, David sent servants to comfort his son Hanun. But Hanun's princes suspected that David had sent spies, not comforters.
Hanun believed them. He shamed David's servants by shaving half their beards and cutting their garments. David cared for his men and told them to wait at Jericho until their beards had grown. The Ammonites knew they had become odious to David, so they hired thousands of Syrian soldiers.
Joab found himself between two armies. He chose the best men to face the Syrians and gave the rest to Abishai to face Ammon. He said they would help each other. Then Joab said, Be courageous, and let's be strong for our people and for the cities of our God; and may Yahweh do what seems good to him. The Syrians fled, and later David defeated them again.
