How the Mighty Have Fallen

Name Date

Read the Story

David was in the town of Ziklag. On the third day, a man came from Saul's camp. His clothes were torn, and there was dirt on his head. He told David that Israel had run from the battle. Saul and Jonathan had died.

David and all his men tore their clothes. They mourned and wept and fasted until evening. The man said he had hurt Saul, and David punished him. David would not let anyone harm the king God had chosen.

Then David sang a sad song. Over and over he said, How the mighty have fallen! He said Saul and Jonathan were swifter than eagles and stronger than lions. He called Jonathan his brother and said Jonathan had been very pleasant to him.

A Song of the Bow

Name Date

Read and Think

Second Samuel begins right after King Saul's death. David had just returned to Ziklag after defeating the Amalekites. A young man arrived from the battle on Mount Gilboa. He said that Israel had fled, and that Saul and Jonathan were dead. He even brought Saul's crown and bracelet.

The young man claimed that he had killed Saul. David asked why he was not afraid to destroy the Lord's anointed king. David had him put to death. Even though Saul had chased David for years, David still honored him as the king God had chosen.

Then David wrote a lament, the song of the bow, and told the people of Judah to teach it. He grieved for Saul and for Jonathan, his loyal friend. He said, Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives. In their death, they were not divided.

David's Lament

Name Date

Read and Think

The book of Second Samuel opens where First Samuel ends. Saul and his son Jonathan had fallen in battle against the Philistines on Mount Gilboa. Two days after David returned to Ziklag from striking the Amalekites, a young man arrived with torn clothes and earth on his head, a sign of mourning. He told David the terrible news.

The messenger was an Amalekite. He said that Saul, badly wounded, had asked him to end his life, and that he had done it. He handed David the crown and bracelet as proof. Instead, David mourned, wept, and fasted. Then David asked why the man had not been afraid to destroy the Lord's anointed, and he ordered the man put to death, saying that the man's own mouth had testified against him.

David's lament is one of the most famous poems in the Bible. Its refrain is, How the mighty have fallen! David did not celebrate the death of the king who had hunted him. He asked that the news not be told in the Philistine cities, and he called the daughters of Israel to weep for Saul. Above all, he grieved for Jonathan, whose love and friendship had been wonderful to him.

Show What You Know

  1. Where did Saul and Jonathan fall?

  2. What did torn clothes and earth on the head show?

  3. What did the Amalekite hand to David?

  4. Why was the Amalekite put to death?

  5. What is the refrain of David's lament?
