The Word of Elijah Fulfilled

Name Date

Read and Think

Elisha sent one of the sons of the prophets with a flask of oil to Ramoth Gilead. He took Jehu son of Jehoshaphat, son of Nimshi, into an inner room and poured oil on his head. He announced that the Lord had anointed him king over Israel to strike the house of Ahab and avenge the blood of the prophets Jezebel had shed. Then he opened the door and fled.

Jehu's fellow officers spread their garments under him on the bare steps, blew the trumpet, and proclaimed that Jehu was king. Jehu raced to Jezreel, where Joram lay recovering from wounds, and Ahaziah of Judah was visiting. The watchman reported that the driving was like the driving of Jehu, for he drove furiously. Joram asked if it was peace. Jehu said there could be no peace while the sins of Jezebel were so many.

Jehu shot Joram with an arrow, and his body was cast on Naboth's field, fulfilling God's word about Naboth's blood. Ahaziah fled but was struck down and died at Megiddo. Jezebel painted her eyes and looked out a window, taunting Jehu. He called for anyone on his side, and servants threw her down. She died, and when they went to bury her, little remained. Jehu said this was the word the Lord spoke by Elijah.

2 Kings 9 · Grade 5

The Justice of God

Name Date

Read and Think

Years earlier, God had told Elijah at Horeb to anoint Jehu (1 Kings 19:16). Now Elisha completed the task through a young prophet. Jehu was commissioned to strike the house of Ahab as judgment for the blood of the prophets and all the Lord's servants shed by Jezebel. The anointing was swift and secret, and the messenger fled.

Jehu's rise was sudden. His fellow commanders proclaimed him king, and he drove furiously toward Jezreel. When Joram asked if it was peace, Jehu answered that there could be no peace while Jezebel's idolatry and witchcraft continued. Joram fell on the very field of Naboth, the field Ahab had stolen. Ahaziah of Judah, Ahab's grandson, also died. God had not forgotten Naboth.

Jezebel met Jehu with painted eyes and a taunt, calling him Zimri. Jehu called for anyone on his side, and her own servants threw her down. When they went to bury her, little remained, fulfilling Elijah's word that dogs would eat her at Jezreel. The chapter is hard to read, but it shows that God's justice is certain, though it may seem slow. In the New Testament, Peter says the Lord is not slow concerning His promise, but is patient, not wishing that anyone should perish (2 Peter 3:9).

Show What You Know

  1. Where had God first spoken of anointing Jehu?

  2. Why is it significant that Joram fell on Naboth's field?

  3. What did Jezebel call Jehu?

  4. What does Peter say in 2 Peter 3:9 in the New Testament?
