The prophets needed a bigger place to live. They went to the Jordan to cut wood. One man's ax head fell into the water. He cried out that it was borrowed. Elisha cut a stick and threw it in. The iron floated, and the man took it.

The king of Syria was at war with Israel. Each time he planned an attack, Elisha warned Israel's king. The Syrian king learned Elisha was in Dothan. He sent horses, chariots, and a great army by night. In the morning, Elisha's servant saw the army and was afraid.

Elisha said not to be afraid. Those who are with us are more than those who are with them. He prayed that God would open the servant's eyes. The servant saw the mountain full of horses and chariots of fire. Elisha prayed, and God struck the army blind. Elisha led them to Samaria. Israel's king wanted to strike them. Elisha said to give them food and water. So the king made a great feast and sent them home.

Those Who Are with Us

Name Date

Read and Think

The sons of the prophets told Elisha their meeting place was too small. They went to the Jordan to cut beams. As one man cut a tree, his ax head fell into the water. He cried out to his master, for it was borrowed. Elisha cut a stick and threw it where it fell, and the iron floated.

The king of Syria made secret plans for attacks, but Elisha told the king of Israel where the Syrians would be. The king of Syria thought there was a traitor. His servants said Elisha told the king of Israel even the words spoken in the bedroom. He sent horses, chariots, and a great army to surround Dothan by night.

Elisha's servant rose early, saw the army, and cried out. Elisha told him not to fear, for those with them were more than those with the enemy. Elisha prayed that God would open his eyes, and the young man saw the mountain full of horses and chariots of fire around Elisha. God struck the Syrians blind at Elisha's word, and he led them into Samaria. When the king of Israel asked if he should strike them, Elisha said to set bread and water before them. After a great feast they went home, and the Syrian raiders stopped coming for a time.

Unseen Armies

Name Date

Read and Think

The chapter begins with a small miracle that shows God's care in everyday life. A prophet lost a borrowed ax head in the Jordan. Elisha threw in a stick and the iron floated. The same God who parts rivers notices a lost tool.

The king of Syria discovered that his secret plans were reaching the king of Israel through Elisha. He sent an army to capture one prophet in Dothan. Elisha's servant saw only the enemy and despaired. Elisha saw more: those who are with us are more than those who are with them. When God opened the servant's eyes, he saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire. Faith does not deny danger. It sees God's greater presence in the middle of it.

God struck the Syrians blind, and Elisha led them to Samaria. When the king of Israel wanted to kill them, Elisha told him to feed them instead. A great feast was set, the soldiers were sent home, and the raids stopped for a time. Mercy disarmed the enemy. Later, a terrible famine struck Samaria during a siege, and the king blamed Elisha. In the New Testament, Paul writes, If your enemy is hungry, feed him (Romans 12:20), and he urges believers to overcome evil with good (Romans 12:21).
