The wife of a prophet came to Elisha. Her husband had died. She owed money and could not pay. She had only a jar of oil. Elisha told her to borrow many empty jars. She shut the door and poured. Every jar filled. When there were no more jars, the oil stopped. She sold the oil and paid her debt.

A rich woman in Shunem made a small room for Elisha. Elisha said she would have a son, and she did. When the boy grew, he got sick and died. She went to Elisha. He came and prayed. He lay on the boy, and the boy's body grew warm. The boy sneezed seven times and opened his eyes!

Oil, a Son, and Bread

Name Date

Read and Think

A widow of one of the prophets cried to Elisha. Her husband had feared the Lord, but he had died in debt, and the creditor was coming to take her two sons. She had only a jar of oil. Elisha told her to borrow many empty containers, shut the door, and pour. The oil flowed until every vessel was full. Then Elisha told her to sell the oil, pay the debt, and live on the rest.

A wealthy woman of Shunem often fed Elisha and built him a small upper room with a bed, table, chair, and lamp. Elisha promised she would have a son, and the next year she did. When the boy grew, he cried that his head hurt, and he died on his mother's lap. She laid him on Elisha's bed and rode to Mount Carmel. Elisha came, shut the door, and prayed to the Lord. He stretched himself on the child, and the boy sneezed seven times and opened his eyes.

During a famine at Gilgal, a man gathered wild gourds for stew. When the prophets tasted it, they cried that there was death in the pot. Elisha added flour, and nothing harmful remained. A man brought twenty barley loaves of firstfruits. Elisha said to give them to the people. His servant asked how this could feed a hundred men. They ate and had some left over, according to the word of the Lord.

The God of Life and Plenty

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 4 shows God caring for ordinary people through Elisha. A prophet's widow faced losing her sons to a creditor. God multiplied her small jar of oil to fill every vessel she could borrow. The oil stopped only when the containers ran out. The measure of the miracle matched the measure of her faith and obedience.

The Shunammite woman showed hospitality, building a room for the man of God. God gave her a son, and when the boy died, her faith was fierce. She told her husband and Gehazi that it was well and would not rest until Elisha came. Elisha shut the door, prayed, and stretched himself on the child twice. The boy was restored. Like Elijah before him, Elisha was used by God to give life to an only son.

Two smaller miracles close the chapter. Elisha neutralized poisoned stew with flour, and he fed a hundred men with twenty loaves, and there was some left over, according to the word of the Lord. These signs point forward. In the New Testament, Jesus fed five thousand with five loaves and two fish, and the leftovers filled twelve baskets (John 6:9-13). Hebrews also remembers women who received their dead raised to life again (Hebrews 11:35).

  2. What did the Shunammite say when her son died?

  3. Whose earlier miracle does the Shunammite's son echo?

  4. What does Hebrews 11:35 remember in the New Testament?
