2 Kings 25 · Grade 5
Judgment and a Thread of Hope
Read and Think
Around 586 BC, the unthinkable happened. After a long siege and severe famine, Jerusalem's wall was breached. The temple Solomon had dedicated, where God had placed His name, was burned. The walls were broken down, and the bronze pillars Jachin and Boaz were carried off in pieces. The words of Moses had come true: disobedience would lead to exile from the land (Deuteronomy 28:36).
The narrator's summary is brief and heavy: so Judah was carried away captive out of his land. The story that began with Solomon's glory ends in ashes. Both kingdoms, Israel and Judah, rejected the Lord's warnings despite the patience He showed through prophet after prophet. The books of Kings explain why the exile happened. The fault lay not with God but with His people's persistent unfaithfulness.
Yet the final verses glow with quiet hope. Jehoiachin, David's heir, was released from prison, given a seat of honor, and fed at the king's table. David's line had not been extinguished. God's promise of a lamp for David still stood. That line would lead, generations later, to the true King. In the New Testament, Matthew traces Jesus' genealogy through Jehoiachin, called Jechoniah, from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ (Matthew 1:11-12, 17).
