2 Kings 25 · Grade 3
The City Falls
Read the Story
Zedekiah rebelled against Babylon. So Nebuchadnezzar came with his whole army and camped around Jerusalem. The siege lasted until the eleventh year of Zedekiah. There was no bread for the people. Then the city wall was broken. Zedekiah ran away at night, but the army caught him.
Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, burned the Lord's house, the king's house, and all the great houses. The army broke down the walls of Jerusalem. They carried the bronze, silver, and gold to Babylon. Most of the people were taken away. The captain left some of the poorest people to work the vineyards and fields.
Babylon made Gedaliah governor over the people who stayed. He told them to serve the king of Babylon, and it would be well with them. Years later, a new king of Babylon let Jehoiachin out of prison. He spoke kindly to him. Jehoiachin put off his prison clothes. He ate at the king's table for the rest of his life.
