A king named Nebuchadnezzar ruled Babylon. His army came to Jerusalem. The people had not obeyed God for a long time.

The young king of Judah gave up. Babylon took him far away. They took many people too. They took the gold from God's house.

Only the poorest people stayed. It was a sad time. But God still loved His people. He would bring them home one day.

“He carried away all Jerusalem, and all the princes, and all the mighty men of valor, even ten thousand captives, and all the craftsmen and the smiths. No one remained except the poorest people of the land.”

As the Lord Had Spoken

Name Date

Read and Think

In Jehoiakim's days, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up. Jehoiakim served him three years. Then he rebelled. The Lord sent bands of Chaldeans, Syrians, Moabites, and Ammonites against Judah. This was the word He spoke by His prophets. It came at the Lord's command. He would remove Judah from His sight for Manasseh's sins. Manasseh had shed innocent blood.

Jehoiachin was eighteen when he became king. He reigned three months and did evil. Then Nebuchadnezzar's servants besieged Jerusalem. The king himself came. Jehoiachin went out to the king of Babylon. His mother, servants, and princes went with him. In Nebuchadnezzar's eighth year, he took him prisoner.

He took all the treasures of the Lord's house and the king's house. He cut in pieces the gold vessels Solomon had made, as the Lord had said. He carried away the princes and the mighty men. He took ten thousand captives, and all the craftsmen and smiths. None remained except the poorest people of the land. He made Mattaniah king and changed his name to Zedekiah. Zedekiah did evil and rebelled against the king of Babylon.

The Beginning of Exile

Name Date

Read and Think

Judah's final years unfold with grim certainty. Babylon replaced Assyria and Egypt as the great power. Jehoiakim's rebellion brought raiders, but the narrator insists the true cause was the Lord's judgment for Manasseh's sins. Behind the armies stood the Lord, keeping the warnings He had given through the prophets for generations.

In 597 BC, after only three months, Jehoiachin surrendered. Isaiah's words to Hezekiah were fulfilled: the treasures of the palace and temple were carried to Babylon (2 Kings 20:17). Ten thousand of Judah's leaders, warriors, and craftsmen went into exile. Among the exiles of these years were Daniel and Ezekiel, through whom God continued to speak.

Nebuchadnezzar placed Zedekiah on the throne, but he too did evil and rebelled. Yet exile was not the end. Through Jeremiah, God told the exiles to seek the welfare of the city where they lived, promising to bring them back after seventy years (Jeremiah 29:7, 10). In the New Testament, Peter calls believers foreigners and pilgrims, urging them to live honorably among the nations (1 Peter 2:11-12).

  1. What does the narrator insist was the true cause of the raids?

  2. Whose words to Hezekiah were fulfilled?
