With All His Heart

Name Date

Read the Story

Josiah gathered all the leaders and people, small and great. He read the book of the covenant to them. Standing by the pillar, he made a covenant to follow the Lord with all his heart and soul. All the people joined in the covenant.

Josiah had everything made for Baal and Asherah taken out of the temple and burned. He broke down the high places from one end of Judah to the other. He went to Bethel and tore down the altar Jeroboam made. A man of God had said this would happen long before. Josiah left that man's grave alone.

Josiah told the people to keep the Passover as written in the book. No Passover like it had been kept since the days of the judges. No king before or after turned to the Lord like Josiah. Still, the Lord's anger against Judah because of Manasseh did not turn away. Josiah died at Megiddo in a battle with Pharaoh Neco of Egypt.

Memory Verse

“There was no king like him before him, who turned to Yahweh with all his heart, and with all his soul, and with all his might, according to all the law of Moses; and there was none like him who arose after him.”

A Covenant Renewed

Name Date

Read and Think

The king gathered all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem and went up to the Lord's house with all the people, small and great. He read in their hearing all the words of the book of the covenant found in the temple. Standing by the pillar, he made a covenant to walk after the Lord, keeping His commandments with all his heart and soul. All the people stood to the covenant.

Josiah removed from the temple the vessels made for Baal, Asherah, and the army of the sky and burned them outside Jerusalem. He removed the idolatrous priests and defiled Topheth, where children had been made to pass through the fire. He tore down the altars Manasseh had built in the temple courts. At Bethel, he broke down Jeroboam's altar and high place, fulfilling the word of the man of God from Judah (1 Kings 13:2). He spared that prophet's tomb.

The king commanded all the people to keep the Passover as written in the book of the covenant. Surely no such Passover had been kept since the judges. Before him there was no king like him, who turned to the Lord with all his heart, soul, and might, according to all the law of Moses. Nevertheless, the Lord did not turn from His great wrath because of Manasseh. Pharaoh Neco killed Josiah at Megiddo. Egypt then set Jehoiakim on the throne and demanded tribute.

The Greatest Reform

Name Date

Read and Think

Josiah's reform began with the Word. Before he destroyed a single idol, he read the book of the covenant aloud to the whole nation and led them in renewing their commitment. True reform starts with hearing God's Word and responding in obedience.

The cleansing was thorough: the temple, Jerusalem, the cities of Judah, and even Bethel in the old northern kingdom. There, Josiah fulfilled a prophecy given about three hundred years earlier, when an unnamed man of God foretold that a king named Josiah would defile Jeroboam's altar (1 Kings 13:2). God's word does not fail, no matter how long it takes. The Passover that followed was the greatest since the judges.

Kings gives Josiah its highest praise: no king turned to the Lord with all his heart, soul, and might as he did, the very words of Deuteronomy 6:5. Yet the Lord's wrath because of Manasseh remained, and Josiah fell at Megiddo. Even the best king could not save his people from sin's judgment. In the New Testament, Jesus calls loving the Lord with all your heart, soul, and mind the greatest commandment (Matthew 22:37-38).

  2. About how long before had the man of God foretold Josiah?

  3. Which verse do the words of Josiah's praise echo?

  4. What does Jesus call the greatest commandment in Matthew 22:37-38 in the New Testament?
