A Tender Heart

Name Date

Read the Story

Josiah was eight when he became king. He ruled thirty-one years. He did right and walked in David's ways. He did not turn to the right or the left. He sent Shaphan the scribe to the temple. The money was to pay workers to fix the house.

Hilkiah the high priest told Shaphan he had found the book of the law in the Lord's house. Shaphan read it. Then he read it to the king. When Josiah heard the words, he tore his clothes. He knew the people had not obeyed the book.

Josiah sent men to ask the Lord. They went to Huldah the prophetess. She said trouble would come because the people left God. But Josiah's heart was tender. He humbled himself and wept. So the trouble would not come in his days. He would be buried in peace.

Memory Verse

When the King Heard the Words

Name Date

Read and Think

Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem. He did right in the Lord's eyes, walked in all the ways of David, and did not turn aside to the right hand or the left. In his eighteenth year, he sent Shaphan the scribe to Hilkiah the high priest to pay the carpenters and masons repairing the temple.

Hilkiah told Shaphan he had found the book of the law in the Lord's house. Shaphan read it, then read it before the king. When the king heard the words of the book of the law, he tore his clothes. He sent Hilkiah and others to inquire of the Lord, for great was the Lord's wrath, because their fathers had not listened to the words of this book.

They went to Huldah the prophetess, wife of Shallum, keeper of the wardrobe. She said the Lord would bring evil on this place, for the people had forsaken Him and burned incense to other gods. But because Josiah's heart was tender and he humbled himself, tore his clothes, and wept, the Lord had heard him. He would be gathered to his grave in peace and would not see all the evil.

  1. In what year of his reign did Josiah send Shaphan?

Rediscovering the Word

Name Date

Read and Think

Josiah began to reign as a child after the long darkness of Manasseh and Amon. The verdict on him is among the highest in Kings: he walked in all the ways of David and turned aside neither to the right nor to the left, echoing Moses' instructions in Deuteronomy 5:32. Under his leadership, the temple was repaired.

During the repairs, Hilkiah found the book of the law. That it could be lost in God's own house shows how far Judah had drifted. When Shaphan read it, Josiah tore his clothes. He immediately understood that Judah stood under the curses the law warned about. He did not argue or delay. He sought the Lord.

Huldah's prophecy confirmed both judgment and mercy. Judah's long rebellion would bring disaster, but Josiah's tender, humble heart would be honored. He would be spared seeing it. God's Word, once rediscovered, exposed sin and opened the way to repentance. In the New Testament, Hebrews says the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart (Hebrews 4:12).

Show What You Know

  1. Which instruction of Moses does Josiah's verdict echo?

  2. What does the lost book show about Judah?

  3. How did Josiah respond when he understood?

  4. How does Hebrews 4:12 in the New Testament describe the word of God?
