A Very Bad King

Name Date

Read the Story

Manasseh was twelve when he became king. He ruled a long time. His father Hezekiah was good. But Manasseh did evil.

He built back the places for idols. He put altars for false gods in God's house. He led the people to do wrong.

God sent prophets to warn them. God said trouble would come to Jerusalem. Then Manasseh's son Amon was king. He did evil too. Then little Josiah became king.

Memory Verse

“He did that which was evil in Yahweh’s sight, after the abominations of the nations whom Yahweh cast out before the children of Israel.”

Worse Than the Nations

Name Date

Read the Story

Manasseh was twelve when he became king. He ruled fifty-five years in Jerusalem. He did evil like the nations the Lord had driven out. He built again the high places his father Hezekiah had broken down. He made altars for Baal and an Asherah, as Ahab did.

He built altars for the stars in the two courts of the Lord's house. He set an idol in the temple, where God said He would put His name. Manasseh led the people to do more evil than the nations God had destroyed.

The Lord spoke by His prophets. He said He would bring such trouble on Jerusalem that ears would tingle. He would wipe Jerusalem as a man wipes a dish. Manasseh died, and his son Amon ruled two years. He did evil too, and his servants killed him. The people made his son Josiah king.

Memory Verse

Ears Will Tingle

Name Date

Read and Think

Manasseh was twelve when he began to reign, and he reigned fifty-five years. He did evil after the abominations of the nations the Lord cast out. He rebuilt the high places Hezekiah destroyed, raised altars for Baal, made an Asherah as Ahab had done, and worshiped all the army of the sky. He made his son pass through the fire, practiced sorcery, and dealt with mediums.

He built altars in the Lord's house, the place of which the Lord had said, I will put my name in Jerusalem. He set the carved Asherah image in the temple. Manasseh seduced Judah to do more evil than the nations the Lord had destroyed before Israel. He also shed very much innocent blood, until he filled Jerusalem from one end to another.

The Lord spoke by His servants the prophets. He would bring such evil on Jerusalem that whoever heard of it, both his ears would tingle. He would stretch over Jerusalem the line of Samaria and wipe it as one wipes a dish, turning it upside down. Manasseh died, and Amon his son reigned two years, doing evil. His servants conspired and killed him, and the people made Josiah his son king.

The Point of No Return

Name Date

Read and Think

Manasseh's fifty-five-year reign was the longest and darkest in Judah's history. He systematically reversed Hezekiah's reforms. He rebuilt the high places, adopted Ahab's Baal worship, filled the temple courts with altars to the army of the sky, and practiced sorcery and child sacrifice. He led Judah to do more evil than the Canaanites whom God had driven out.

God's verdict was severe. Jerusalem would be measured with the same line as Samaria and wiped clean like a dish. Later chapters show that even Josiah's reforms could not turn away this judgment, because of all that Manasseh had done (2 Kings 23:26). Sin has consequences that can reach beyond a single generation.

Yet there is more to Manasseh's story. Second Chronicles records that when he was taken captive to Babylon, he humbled himself greatly, prayed, and God heard him and brought him back (2 Chronicles 33:12-13). No one is beyond the reach of God's grace. In the New Testament, Paul calls himself the chief of sinners, saved so that Christ might display His patience (1 Timothy 1:15-16).

Show What You Know

  1. Whose reforms did Manasseh reverse?

  2. According to 2 Kings 23:26, why could Josiah's reforms not turn away judgment?

  3. What does 2 Chronicles 33 record about Manasseh in Babylon?

  4. What does Paul call himself in 1 Timothy 1:15 in the New Testament?
