The Point of No Return

Read and Think

Manasseh's fifty-five-year reign was the longest and darkest in Judah's history. He systematically reversed Hezekiah's reforms. He rebuilt the high places, adopted Ahab's Baal worship, filled the temple courts with altars to the army of the sky, and practiced sorcery and child sacrifice. He led Judah to do more evil than the Canaanites whom God had driven out.

God's verdict was severe. Jerusalem would be measured with the same line as Samaria and wiped clean like a dish. Later chapters show that even Josiah's reforms could not turn away this judgment, because of all that Manasseh had done (2 Kings 23:26). Sin has consequences that can reach beyond a single generation.

Yet there is more to Manasseh's story. Second Chronicles records that when he was taken captive to Babylon, he humbled himself greatly, prayed, and God heard him and brought him back (2 Chronicles 33:12-13). No one is beyond the reach of God's grace. In the New Testament, Paul calls himself the chief of sinners, saved so that Christ might display His patience (1 Timothy 1:15-16).
