A Double Share

Name Date

Read the Story

God was about to take Elijah up to heaven. Elijah and Elisha went from Gilgal to Bethel, then to Jericho. Three times Elijah told Elisha to stay. Each time Elisha said he would not leave him. Prophets in each town knew Elijah would be taken.

At the Jordan, Elijah rolled up his coat and struck the water. It parted, and they crossed on dry ground. Elijah asked what he could do for Elisha. Elisha asked for a double share of his spirit. Elijah said it was a hard thing. But if Elisha saw him taken, it would be his.

As they walked and talked, a chariot of fire with horses of fire came between them. Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. Elisha cried out and tore his clothes. He took Elijah's coat and struck the Jordan. It parted again. Then Elisha healed the bad water of Jericho with salt. The water stayed healed.

The Chariot of Fire

Name Date

Read and Think

The Lord was about to take Elijah up by a whirlwind. Elijah and Elisha set out from Gilgal. At Gilgal, at Bethel, and at Jericho, Elijah told Elisha to stay. Each time Elisha said he would not leave him. Fifty sons of the prophets watched from a distance.

Elijah rolled up his mantle and struck the water, and it divided so they crossed on dry ground, as Israel had crossed long before. Elijah asked what Elisha wanted before he was taken. Elisha asked for a double portion of Elijah's spirit, the share an heir received. Elijah said it was a hard thing, but if Elisha saw him taken, it would be granted.

A chariot of fire and horses of fire separated them, and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. Elisha cried, my father, my father, the chariots of Israel and its horsemen! He took up the mantle, struck the water, and asked where the Lord, the God of Elijah, was. The water parted. Elisha healed Jericho's water with salt. Near Bethel, some youths mocked him. He cursed them in the Lord's name, and two bears came out of the woods and attacked forty-two of them. It was a warning not to mock God's prophet.

The Mantle Passes

Name Date

Read and Think

Elijah's final journey went from Gilgal to Bethel, to Jericho, and across the Jordan. Elisha's threefold refusal to leave showed his loyalty. The question was not whether Elijah would go, for the sons of the prophets knew, but whether Elisha would be ready to carry on.

Elisha's request for a double portion was not greed. Under the Law, the firstborn heir received a double share (Deuteronomy 21:17). Elisha was asking to be Elijah's true successor. The sign would be whether he saw Elijah taken. When the chariot of fire appeared, Elisha saw it and cried out, my father, my father, the chariots of Israel and its horsemen. Elisha's cry suggests that Elijah, not armies, had been Israel's real defense.

Elisha picked up the fallen mantle and struck the Jordan, asking where the Lord, the God of Elijah, was. The waters parted, and the prophets recognized that Elijah's spirit rested on Elisha. He healed Jericho's water with salt. When a crowd of young men mocked him near Bethel, he cursed them in God's name, and two bears attacked forty-two of them. It was a serious warning against despising God's messenger. In the New Testament, Elijah appears with Moses on the mount of transfiguration, talking with Jesus (Matthew 17:3).
