The Prayer and the Answer

Read the Story

Hezekiah tore his clothes and went to the Lord's house. He sent men to Isaiah the prophet. Isaiah said not to be afraid of the words Assyria spoke against the Lord. God would send Sennacherib home.

Sennacherib sent a letter. It said not to let God deceive them. Hezekiah read it and went up to the Lord's house. He spread the letter before the Lord. He prayed to the God who made heaven and earth. He asked God to save them so all kingdoms would know He alone is God.

Isaiah sent God's answer. The king of Assyria would not come into the city or shoot an arrow there. God would defend the city for His own sake and for David's sake. That night God sent His angel and stopped the Assyrian army. Sennacherib went home to Nineveh.

Memory Verse

Spread Before the Lord

Name Date

Read and Think

When Hezekiah heard the Rabshakeh's words, he tore his clothes, covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the Lord's house. He sent his officials to Isaiah. Isaiah answered that they should not be afraid of the words by which Assyria's servants had blasphemed the Lord. God would put a spirit in Sennacherib so he would hear a rumor and return to his own land.

Sennacherib sent a letter warning Hezekiah not to let his God deceive him. Hezekiah received it, went up to the Lord's house, and spread it before the Lord. He prayed to the Lord, enthroned above the cherubim, the God of all the kingdoms of the earth, who made heaven and earth. He admitted that Assyria had destroyed nations and their gods, for they were no gods but the work of men's hands. He asked the Lord to save them so all the kingdoms would know that He alone is God.

Isaiah sent the Lord's reply. The Lord had heard. Sennacherib would not enter the city, shoot an arrow there, or build a siege ramp. The Lord would defend the city for His own sake and for David's. That night the angel of the Lord struck one hundred eighty-five thousand in the Assyrian camp. Sennacherib returned to Nineveh. There, while he worshiped in his god's temple, his sons killed him.

The Living God Answers

Name Date

Read and Think

Hezekiah's response to crisis is a model. He humbled himself in sackcloth, went to God's house, and sought God's word through Isaiah. When the threatening letter came, he did not panic or bargain. He spread it before the Lord. His prayer began with who God is: enthroned above the cherubim, Creator of heaven and earth, God of all kingdoms.

Hezekiah's central request went beyond survival. He asked God to save them so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that the Lord alone is God. Sennacherib had mocked the living God. The issue was God's honor. Isaiah's oracle answered with sharp irony: the proud king who boasted of conquering mountains would be led home with a hook in his nose.

God promised that a remnant of Judah would again take root downward and bear fruit upward. That night the angel of the Lord struck one hundred eighty-five thousand Assyrians. Sennacherib went home and was later killed by his own sons in the temple of his god, who could not protect him. In the New Testament, Paul writes that if God is for us, who can be against us? (Romans 8:31).

Show What You Know

  1. With what did Hezekiah's prayer begin?

  2. What was Hezekiah's central request?

  3. What did God promise about the remnant?

  4. What does Paul ask in Romans 8:31 in the New Testament?
