2 Kings 19 · Grade 4
Spread Before the Lord
Read and Think
When Hezekiah heard the Rabshakeh's words, he tore his clothes, covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the Lord's house. He sent his officials to Isaiah. Isaiah answered that they should not be afraid of the words by which Assyria's servants had blasphemed the Lord. God would put a spirit in Sennacherib so he would hear a rumor and return to his own land.
Sennacherib sent a letter warning Hezekiah not to let his God deceive him. Hezekiah received it, went up to the Lord's house, and spread it before the Lord. He prayed to the Lord, enthroned above the cherubim, the God of all the kingdoms of the earth, who made heaven and earth. He admitted that Assyria had destroyed nations and their gods, for they were no gods but the work of men's hands. He asked the Lord to save them so all the kingdoms would know that He alone is God.
Isaiah sent the Lord's reply. The Lord had heard. Sennacherib would not enter the city, shoot an arrow there, or build a siege ramp. The Lord would defend the city for His own sake and for David's. That night the angel of the Lord struck one hundred eighty-five thousand in the Assyrian camp. Sennacherib returned to Nineveh. There, while he worshiped in his god's temple, his sons killed him.
