Whom Will You Trust?

Name Date

Read the Story

Hezekiah did right like David. He took away the high places and broke the pillars. He broke the bronze snake Moses made. The people had been burning incense to it. He trusted the Lord. No king of Judah was like him. The Lord was with him.

Sennacherib king of Assyria took the strong cities of Judah. Hezekiah paid him silver and gold. But Sennacherib still sent a great army to Jerusalem. His officer, the Rabshakeh, stood by the wall and shouted.

He asked what Hezekiah was trusting in. He said not to let Hezekiah make them trust the Lord. He said no god had saved any land from Assyria. The people stayed silent. Hezekiah had told them not to answer. Hezekiah's men tore their clothes and told him what was said.

On Whom Do You Trust?

Name Date

Read and Think

Hezekiah son of Ahaz did right like David. He removed the high places, broke the pillars, and cut down the Asherah. He broke in pieces the bronze serpent Moses had made, for Israel had burned incense to it; he called it Nehushtan. He trusted in the Lord, so that there was none like him among Judah's kings. He held fast to the Lord and kept His commandments, and the Lord was with him.

In Hezekiah's fourteenth year, Sennacherib king of Assyria seized Judah's fortified cities. Hezekiah paid three hundred talents of silver and thirty of gold, even stripping the temple doors. Still the king of Assyria sent the Tartan, the Rabsaris, and the Rabshakeh with a great army to Jerusalem.

The Rabshakeh asked on whom Hezekiah was trusting. He mocked Egypt as a broken reed. He claimed the Lord had sent Assyria against the land. He told the people not to let Hezekiah deceive them or make them trust in the Lord. He asked where the gods of Hamath and Arpad were. But the people held their peace and answered not a word, for the king had commanded them not to answer.

The Question of Trust

Name Date

Read and Think

Hezekiah is praised above all Judah's kings for trust. His reforms were bold. He even destroyed the bronze serpent from Moses' day, because it had become an idol. A good gift from God's past had become a snare. In the New Testament, Jesus says that as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up (John 3:14).

Yet trust was tested. Sennacherib swept through Judah's fortified cities. Hezekiah first tried to buy peace, even stripping gold from the temple doors. The payment did not work. Assyria's army came to Jerusalem anyway.

The Rabshakeh's speech is a masterpiece of intimidation. The key word is trust, repeated again and again. He attacked every possible support: Egypt, Hezekiah, and even the Lord. He claimed that no god had saved any land from Assyria, placing the Lord among the idols of Hamath and Arpad. That was his fatal mistake. The people answered nothing, leaving the reply to God.

Show What You Know

  1. Why did Hezekiah destroy the bronze serpent?

  2. What does Jesus say in John 3:14 in the New Testament?

  3. What did Hezekiah first try when Sennacherib came?

  4. What was the Rabshakeh's fatal mistake?
