The Wrong Kind of Help

Name Date

Read the Story

Ahaz was twenty when he became king. He ruled sixteen years in Jerusalem. He did not do right like David. He walked in the ways of Israel's kings. He offered sacrifices on the high places and under every green tree.

Rezin of Syria and Pekah of Israel came to fight Jerusalem. Ahaz sent a message to Tiglath Pileser of Assyria. He called himself the Assyrian king's servant and son. He asked him for help. He sent silver and gold from the Lord's house as a gift. The king of Assyria came and took Damascus.

Ahaz went to Damascus to meet the king of Assyria. He saw an altar there. He sent a drawing of it to Urijah the priest. Urijah built one just like it. Ahaz moved the Lord's bronze altar aside. He changed things in the temple for the king of Assyria. Then Ahaz died, and his son Hezekiah became king.

An Altar from Damascus

Name Date

Read and Think

Ahaz began to reign at twenty and reigned sixteen years. He did not do right in the Lord's eyes like David. He walked in the way of Israel's kings. He even made his son pass through the fire. He followed the detestable practices of the nations the Lord had driven out. He sacrificed on the high places, on the hills, and under every green tree.

Rezin king of Syria and Pekah king of Israel besieged Jerusalem but could not conquer it. Ahaz sent messengers to Tiglath Pileser, saying he was the Assyrian's servant and son, and asking to be saved. He sent silver and gold from the Lord's house and the palace as a present. The Assyrian king attacked Damascus, took it, and killed Rezin.

Ahaz went to Damascus to meet Tiglath Pileser and saw the altar there. He sent its pattern to Urijah the priest. Urijah built an altar just like it. Ahaz offered his sacrifices on it. He moved the Lord's bronze altar aside. He changed the temple because of the king of Assyria. Ahaz died, and Hezekiah his son reigned.

Trusting the Wrong King

Name Date

Read and Think

Ahaz was among Judah's worst kings. He adopted the practices of the surrounding nations, including making his son pass through the fire. The narrator compares him not with David but with the kings of Israel, whose ways led to their ruin.

When Syria and Israel attacked, the prophet Isaiah urged Ahaz to trust the Lord and even ask for a sign (Isaiah 7:1-12). Ahaz refused. Instead, he called himself Assyria's servant and son, words that belonged to his relationship with the Lord. He paid Assyria with treasure from God's house. The help worked for a while, but it brought Judah under Assyria's heavy hand.

At Damascus, Ahaz copied a pagan altar and pushed the Lord's bronze altar aside. Worship was redesigned to please a foreign king. In Isaiah's account of these events, God gave a sign anyway: a virgin would conceive and bear a son called Immanuel. In the New Testament, Matthew says this was fulfilled in the birth of Jesus (Matthew 1:22-23).

  1. With whom does the narrator compare Ahaz?

  2. What did Isaiah urge Ahaz to do?

  3. What did Ahaz do with the Lord's bronze altar?
