A Kingdom Falling Apart

Name Date

Read the Story

Azariah became king of Judah at sixteen. He ruled fifty-two years and did right. But the high places stayed. The Lord struck him with leprosy. He lived in a separate house until he died. His son Jotham judged the people.

In Israel, Zechariah ruled six months. He was the fourth king from Jehu, as God had said. Then Shallum took the throne for one month. Menahem took it from him. Then came Pekahiah and Pekah. Each king did evil like Jeroboam.

Pul, king of Assyria, came against Israel. Menahem paid him a thousand talents of silver. Later Tiglath Pileser of Assyria took many cities. He carried people away to Assyria. In Judah, Jotham did right and built the upper gate of the Lord's house.

The Word to Jehu Fulfilled

Name Date

Read and Think

Azariah son of Amaziah began to reign at sixteen. He reigned fifty-two years. He did right as his father had, though the high places remained. The Lord struck him so that he was a leper until his death. He lived in a separate house. Jotham his son judged the people.

In Israel, Zechariah son of Jeroboam reigned six months and did evil. Shallum conspired against him and took the throne. This fulfilled the word the Lord spoke to Jehu: his sons would sit on Israel's throne to the fourth generation. Shallum reigned one month before Menahem overthrew him. Menahem reigned ten years. He paid Pul king of Assyria a thousand talents of silver. He taxed the wealthy men of Israel to raise it.

Menahem's son Pekahiah reigned two years before his captain Pekah conspired against him. In Pekah's days, Tiglath Pileser of Assyria captured many cities. He took all the land of Naphtali and carried the people captive. Then Hoshea conspired against Pekah. In Judah, Jotham did right and built the upper gate of the Lord's house, but the high places were not removed.

  2. Which word did Zechariah's fall fulfill?

The Unraveling

Name Date

Read and Think

Azariah, called Uzziah elsewhere, enjoyed a long reign. Second Chronicles explains that his leprosy came when he proudly entered the temple to burn incense, a task reserved for priests (2 Chronicles 26:16-21). Kings reports only that the Lord struck him. Even a good king was not above God's holiness.

Israel's final decades read like a collapse. Zechariah's fall after six months fulfilled God's word to Jehu exactly. Then came a rapid series: Shallum, Menahem, Pekahiah, Pekah, and Hoshea, most gaining the throne by conspiracy. Each continued Jeroboam's sins. Without faithfulness to God, the kingdom had no stability.

Assyria now dominated the region. Menahem paid tribute, and Tiglath Pileser carried away much of northern Israel. The prophets Hosea and Amos ministered in these years, calling Israel to return. In Judah, Jotham's steady faithfulness stood out. In the New Testament, Jesus says that every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation (Matthew 12:25).

Show What You Know

  1. According to 2 Chronicles 26, why was Azariah struck with leprosy?

  2. How did most of Israel's last kings gain the throne?

  3. Which prophets ministered in these years?

  4. What does Jesus say in Matthew 12:25 in the New Testament?
