2 Kings 15 · Grade 5
The Unraveling
Read and Think
Azariah, called Uzziah elsewhere, enjoyed a long reign. Second Chronicles explains that his leprosy came when he proudly entered the temple to burn incense, a task reserved for priests (2 Chronicles 26:16-21). Kings reports only that the Lord struck him. Even a good king was not above God's holiness.
Israel's final decades read like a collapse. Zechariah's fall after six months fulfilled God's word to Jehu exactly. Then came a rapid series: Shallum, Menahem, Pekahiah, Pekah, and Hoshea, most gaining the throne by conspiracy. Each continued Jeroboam's sins. Without faithfulness to God, the kingdom had no stability.
Assyria now dominated the region. Menahem paid tribute, and Tiglath Pileser carried away much of northern Israel. The prophets Hosea and Amos ministered in these years, calling Israel to return. In Judah, Jotham's steady faithfulness stood out. In the New Testament, Jesus says that every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation (Matthew 12:25).
