The Thistle and the Cedar

Name Date

Read the Story

Amaziah did right, but not like David. He obeyed the law of Moses. He did not punish the children for what their fathers did. He beat Edom in the Valley of Salt.

Then Amaziah sent a message to Jehoash, king of Israel. He asked Jehoash to come and look him in the face. That meant he wanted to fight. Jehoash told a story. A thistle asked a cedar for its daughter. Then a wild animal stepped on the thistle. Jehoash said Amaziah was proud because he beat Edom. He told him to stay home.

Amaziah would not listen. Judah lost, and the men ran home. Jehoash broke down part of Jerusalem's wall. He took the gold and silver from the temple. In Israel, Jeroboam the second was king. God saw how Israel suffered. He used Jeroboam to win back Israel's land, as Jonah the prophet had said.

Pride Goes Before a Fall

Name Date

Read and Think

Amaziah son of Joash did right in the Lord's eyes, yet not like David his father. The high places remained. He put to death the servants who killed his father. But he spared their children. He obeyed the law of Moses that each person dies for his own sin. He struck ten thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt and took Sela.

Then Amaziah challenged Jehoash of Israel to meet face to face in battle. Jehoash replied with a parable: a thistle in Lebanon asked a cedar to give its daughter to his son, but a wild animal trampled the thistle. He said Amaziah's heart had lifted him up after beating Edom. He told him to glory in that and stay home. Otherwise he would fall, and Judah with him.

Amaziah would not listen. At Beth Shemesh Judah was defeated. Jehoash captured Amaziah. He broke down four hundred cubits of Jerusalem's wall. He took the gold, silver, temple treasures, and hostages. Later a conspiracy rose against Amaziah, and he was killed at Lachish. Azariah, age sixteen, became king and built Elath. In Israel, Jeroboam the second restored Israel's border, as the Lord had spoken through Jonah son of Amittai. The Lord saw Israel's bitter affliction and saved them by Jeroboam.

Victory Breeds Pride

Name Date

Read and Think

Amaziah's reign began with careful obedience. When he punished his father's assassins, he spared their children, honoring Deuteronomy 24:16: each person dies for his own sin. His victory over Edom in the Valley of Salt was real. Yet the high places remained, and his devotion fell short of David's.

Success became his snare. Jehoash of Israel saw it plainly: Amaziah's heart had lifted him up. His parable of the thistle and the cedar mocked Amaziah's inflated sense of importance. The warning was wise: Enjoy the glory of it, and stay at home. Amaziah would not hear, and Judah suffered a humiliating defeat. Jerusalem's wall was breached, and the temple treasures were carried off.

In contrast, the chapter ends with unexpected grace to Israel. Though Jeroboam the second did evil, the Lord saw Israel's bitter affliction and had not said He would blot out Israel's name. He used Jeroboam to restore the borders, fulfilling the word of Jonah son of Amittai, the same prophet later sent to Nineveh. God's mercy reached beyond what anyone deserved. In the New Testament, James writes that God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble (James 4:6).
