2 Kings 14 · Grade 3
The Thistle and the Cedar
Read the Story
Amaziah did right, but not like David. He obeyed the law of Moses. He did not punish the children for what their fathers did. He beat Edom in the Valley of Salt.
Then Amaziah sent a message to Jehoash, king of Israel. He asked Jehoash to come and look him in the face. That meant he wanted to fight. Jehoash told a story. A thistle asked a cedar for its daughter. Then a wild animal stepped on the thistle. Jehoash said Amaziah was proud because he beat Edom. He told him to stay home.
Amaziah would not listen. Judah lost, and the men ran home. Jehoash broke down part of Jerusalem's wall. He took the gold and silver from the temple. In Israel, Jeroboam the second was king. God saw how Israel suffered. He used Jeroboam to win back Israel's land, as Jonah the prophet had said.
Memory Verse
“He did that which was right in Yahweh’s eyes, yet not like David his father. He did according to all that Joash his father had done.”
