Only Three Times

Name Date

Read the Story

Jehoahaz was king of Israel. He did evil, so God let Hazael of Syria press hard on Israel. Then Jehoahaz asked the Lord for help. The Lord listened. He gave Israel a savior, and they were free from Syria's hand.

When Elisha was sick, King Jehoash came and cried over him. Elisha told him to take a bow and arrows. He put his hands on the king's hands. The king opened the window and shot. Elisha said it was the Lord's arrow of victory over Syria.

Then Elisha told him to strike the ground. The king struck three times and stopped. Elisha was angry. He said the king should have struck five or six times. Now he would win only three times. Elisha died. Later a dead man was put into Elisha's tomb. When he touched Elisha's bones, he came to life!

The Arrow of Victory

Name Date

Read and Think

Jehoahaz son of Jehu did evil, following Jeroboam's sins. The Lord's anger burned, and He gave Israel into the hand of Hazael and his son Ben Hadad. But Jehoahaz begged the Lord, and the Lord listened, for He saw Israel's oppression. He gave Israel a savior. Yet they did not turn from Jeroboam's sins.

Elisha fell sick with the illness that would kill him. Jehoash king of Israel wept over him, crying, My father, my father, the chariots of Israel and its horsemen! Elisha told him to take bow and arrows. He laid his hands on the king's hands. He said to open the east window and shoot. Elisha declared it the Lord's arrow of victory over Syria.

Then he told the king to strike the ground with the arrows. The king struck three times and stopped. The man of God was angry. He said striking five or six times would have meant complete victory, but now he would strike Syria only three times. Elisha died and was buried. When a dead man was thrown into his tomb and touched his bones, he revived and stood up. The Lord was gracious to Israel because of His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Jehoash defeated Syria three times.

Half-Hearted Faith

Name Date

Read and Think

The reign of Jehoahaz shows a pattern found in Judges. Israel sinned, God allowed oppression, the king sought the Lord, and God sent a deliverer. God listened even to a king who did evil, because He saw the oppression of His people. Yet Israel kept Jeroboam's calves and an Asherah in Samaria.

Elisha's final prophecy came through a symbolic act. With the prophet's hands over his own, Jehoash shot the Lord's arrow of victory. Then came a test: strike the ground. He struck three times and stopped. Elisha's anger reveals that the king's limited zeal limited his victory. The measure of his faith became the measure of his success.

Even in death, Elisha's ministry gave life. A man thrown hastily into his tomb revived on touching his bones. This miracle pointed to the life-giving power of God, not of relics. God remained gracious because of His covenant with the patriarchs and would not yet cast Israel from His presence. In the New Testament, Jesus says that according to their faith it would be done to them (Matthew 9:29).
