The Temple Repaired

Name Date

Read the Story

Joash was seven when he began to rule. He did right all the days Jehoiada taught him. But the high places were not taken away. Joash told the priests to use money to fix the temple. Years went by, and they had not fixed it.

Joash called Jehoiada and the priests. He asked why they had not fixed the house. Jehoiada took a chest and bored a hole in its lid. He set it beside the altar. The priests put in all the money people brought.

The money was counted and given to the workers. They paid carpenters, builders, and stone cutters. They did not ask the workers to give an account. The workers dealt faithfully. Later, Hazael came to attack Jerusalem. Joash sent him the gold from the temple. Then Hazael went away.

Faithful Workers

Name Date

Read and Think

Jehoash began to reign at seven and reigned forty years in Jerusalem. He did right in the Lord's eyes all the days Jehoiada the priest instructed him. However, the high places were not taken away; the people still sacrificed and burned incense there.

Jehoash ordered the priests to use the temple money to repair the breaches in the house. By the twenty-third year of his reign, nothing had been repaired. So the king called Jehoiada and the priests to account. Jehoiada bored a hole in the lid of a chest and set it beside the altar on the right side as one enters. The priests put in all the money brought to the Lord's house.

When the chest was full, the king's scribe and the high priest counted the money and gave it to the overseers, who paid the carpenters, builders, masons, and stonecutters. They did not demand an accounting from the men who handled the money, for they dealt faithfully. Later Hazael king of Syria threatened Jerusalem. Jehoash sent him all the holy things and gold of the temple and palace, and Hazael withdrew. In the end, Jehoash's servants conspired and killed him.

Borrowed Faith

Name Date

Read and Think

Jehoash's reign began well. The verse states it carefully: he did right all his days in which Jehoiada the priest instructed him. His faithfulness was tied to his mentor. The high places remained, a sign the reform was incomplete.

The temple repair project shows both delay and integrity. For twenty-three years the priests did not fix the breaches. Jehoiada's chest beside the altar created a new, open system, and the workers dealt so faithfully that no accounting was required. Generous giving and honest handling went together.

Yet the chapter ends sadly. Facing Hazael, Jehoash stripped the temple of the holy things his ancestors had dedicated and paid off the enemy instead of trusting God. Then his own servants killed him. Faith that leans entirely on another person may falter when that support is gone. In the New Testament, Paul urges believers to work out their own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in them (Philippians 2:12-13).

Show What You Know

  1. To whom was Jehoash's faithfulness tied?

  2. How long did the priests not fix the breaches?

  3. What did Jehoash do instead of trusting God when Hazael came?

  4. What does Paul urge in Philippians 2:12-13 in the New Testament?
