Six Years in Hiding

Name Date

Read the Story

Athaliah was the mother of King Ahaziah. When he died, she tried to destroy the whole royal family. But Jehosheba took baby Joash and hid him with his nurse. He was hidden in God's house for six years while Athaliah ruled.

In the seventh year, Jehoiada the priest called the captains and guards. He showed them the king's son. Guards stood all around the boy. Jehoiada put the crown on him and gave him the law. They made him king. The people clapped and said, Long live the king!

Athaliah heard the noise and came to the temple. She tore her clothes and cried that it was treason. Jehoiada had her led out, and her rule ended. Then Jehoiada made a covenant. The king and people would be the Lord's people. They broke down the house of Baal. Joash was seven years old when he became king.

The Lamp Nearly Goes Out

Name Date

Read and Think

When Athaliah, Ahaziah's mother, saw that her son was dead, she rose and destroyed all the royal offspring. But Jehosheba, King Joram's daughter and Ahaziah's sister, stole away baby Joash and hid him with his nurse in a bedroom. He was hidden with her in the Lord's house six years while Athaliah reigned.

In the seventh year Jehoiada the priest brought the captains into the Lord's house, made a covenant with them, and showed them the king's son. He arranged guards on the Sabbath, each man with weapons in hand, surrounding the king. Then he brought out the king's son, put the crown on him, and gave him the testimony. They anointed him, clapped their hands, and said, Long live the king!

Athaliah came to the temple and saw the king standing by the pillar, with trumpets and rejoicing. She tore her clothes and cried, Treason! Jehoiada ordered her taken out, and she was put to death at the horses' entrance to the palace. Jehoiada made a covenant between the Lord, the king, and the people, that they should be the Lord's people. They broke down Baal's house, smashed its altars and images, and killed Mattan the priest of Baal. The city was quiet.

One Baby Between

Name Date

Read and Think

Athaliah, daughter of Ahab and Jezebel, seized Judah's throne by destroying the royal offspring. For six years, Baal's queen ruled in Jerusalem. David's line, through which God had promised an everlasting kingdom (2 Samuel 7:16), hung on a single hidden child.

God preserved that line through the courage of Jehosheba, who rescued infant Joash, and through Jehoiada the priest, who protected him in the temple. Jehoiada waited six years, then carefully organized the guards for the Sabbath. Joash was crowned, anointed, and given the testimony, the book of God's law, as Deuteronomy 17:18-19 required of a king.

Athaliah's cry of treason was ironic, for she was the usurper. Her reign ended. Jehoiada then renewed the covenant, and the people tore down Baal's house. Satan has often tried to destroy the promised line. In the New Testament, Herod tried to kill the infant Jesus, but God protected Him (Matthew 2:13-16). The promise of David's Son could not be stopped.

Show What You Know

  1. On what did David's line hang during Athaliah's reign?

  2. What did Deuteronomy 17:18-19 require of a king?

  3. Why was Athaliah's cry of treason ironic?

  4. Who tried to kill the infant Jesus in Matthew 2 in the New Testament?
