2 Kings 11 · Grade 5
One Baby Between
Read and Think
Athaliah, daughter of Ahab and Jezebel, seized Judah's throne by destroying the royal offspring. For six years, Baal's queen ruled in Jerusalem. David's line, through which God had promised an everlasting kingdom (2 Samuel 7:16), hung on a single hidden child.
God preserved that line through the courage of Jehosheba, who rescued infant Joash, and through Jehoiada the priest, who protected him in the temple. Jehoiada waited six years, then carefully organized the guards for the Sabbath. Joash was crowned, anointed, and given the testimony, the book of God's law, as Deuteronomy 17:18-19 required of a king.
Athaliah's cry of treason was ironic, for she was the usurper. Her reign ended. Jehoiada then renewed the covenant, and the people tore down Baal's house. Satan has often tried to destroy the promised line. In the New Testament, Herod tried to kill the infant Jesus, but God protected Him (Matthew 2:13-16). The promise of David's Son could not be stopped.
