Is There No God in Israel?

Name Date

Read the Story

Ahaziah king of Israel fell through a window in his upper room. He was hurt. He sent messengers to Baal Zebub, the god of Ekron. They were to ask if he would get well. An angel told Elijah to meet them. Elijah asked if there was no God in Israel. He said the king would not get up from his bed.

The messengers went back. They told the king about a hairy man with a leather belt. The king knew it was Elijah. He sent a captain with fifty men. Elijah said that if he was a man of God, fire would come down. Fire came down from heaven on them. It happened again with a second captain.

The third captain fell on his knees. He begged Elijah to spare his life and his men. The angel told Elijah to go with him and not be afraid. Elijah told the king God's word himself. Ahaziah died, as God had said. He had no son, so his brother Jehoram became king.

The God Who Answers

Name Date

Read and Think

Ahaziah son of Ahab fell through the lattice of his upper room in Samaria and was injured. He sent messengers to ask Baal Zebub, the god of Ekron, whether he would recover. The angel of the Lord sent Elijah to meet them with a question: Is it because there is no God in Israel that you go to inquire of Baal Zebub? Because of this, the king would surely die.

The messengers described a hairy man wearing a leather belt, and the king recognized Elijah. He sent a captain with fifty soldiers, who ordered the man of God to come down. Elijah answered that if he was a man of God, fire would come down from heaven and consume the captain and his fifty. Fire fell. A second captain came with the same proud command, and fire fell again.

The third captain approached differently. He fell on his knees and begged that his life and the lives of his men would be precious in Elijah's sight. The angel told Elijah to go down with him and not be afraid. Elijah went to the king and repeated God's word. Ahaziah died according to the word of the Lord, and Jehoram became king because Ahaziah had no son.

No God in Israel?

Name Date

Read and Think

Second Kings opens where First Kings ended, with Ahab's son Ahaziah on the throne. After a fall through a lattice, he sought help from Baal Zebub, lord of the flies, the god of Ekron. His choice exposed his heart. In his crisis, the king of God's people turned to a Philistine idol. Elijah's question cut deep: Is it because there is no God in Israel?

The confrontation with the captains is a contest of authority. The first two captains addressed Elijah as man of God while commanding him like a servant of the king. Elijah's answer played on the title: if I am a man of God, then let fire come down. The fire confirmed that Elijah's authority came from God, echoing the fire on Carmel.

The third captain recognized whose servant Elijah was. He came humbly and asked for mercy, and mercy was given. Elijah then delivered God's verdict in person, unafraid. Ahaziah died as the Lord had spoken. In the New Testament, when James and John wanted to call down fire on a Samaritan village like Elijah, Jesus rebuked them, for He came to save, not destroy (Luke 9:54-56).
