No God in Israel?

Name Date

Read and Think

Second Kings opens where First Kings ended, with Ahab's son Ahaziah on the throne. After a fall through a lattice, he sought help from Baal Zebub, lord of the flies, the god of Ekron. His choice exposed his heart. In his crisis, the king of God's people turned to a Philistine idol. Elijah's question cut deep: Is it because there is no God in Israel?

The confrontation with the captains is a contest of authority. The first two captains addressed Elijah as man of God while commanding him like a servant of the king. Elijah's answer played on the title: if I am a man of God, then let fire come down. The fire confirmed that Elijah's authority came from God, echoing the fire on Carmel.

The third captain recognized whose servant Elijah was. He came humbly and asked for mercy, and mercy was given. Elijah then delivered God's verdict in person, unafraid. Ahaziah died as the Lord had spoken. In the New Testament, when James and John wanted to call down fire on a Samaritan village like Elijah, Jesus rebuked them, for He came to save, not destroy (Luke 9:54-56).
