Churches That Shared

Name Date

Read the Story

Some churches were very poor. But they were full of joy. They gave all they could, and even more!

Paul asked the church in Corinth to give too. He reminded them of Jesus. Jesus was rich in heaven. He came to earth and became poor to help people.

God does not ask people to give what they do not have. He loves a willing heart. When people share, everyone can have enough.

Memory Verse

“For if the readiness is there, it is acceptable according to what you have, not according to what you don’t have.”

Rich Toward Others

Name Date

Read the Story

Paul told about the churches in Macedonia. They had hard times and were very poor. Still, they gave with great joy, more than anyone expected. First, they gave themselves to the Lord.

Paul asked the Corinthians to give generously too. He reminded them that Jesus was rich, yet He became poor for them. Through Jesus, they became rich in God's grace.

Paul wrote, For if the readiness is there, it is acceptable according to what you have, not according to what you don't have. When some had plenty, they could help those in need. Paul sent Titus to help gather the gift.

The Grace of Giving

Name Date

Read and Think

Paul describes the grace God gave the churches of Macedonia. Though they were in a severe trial and deep poverty, their joy overflowed in rich generosity. They gave as much as they were able, and beyond, begging for the privilege of sharing in the gift for believers in Jerusalem. Above all, they first gave themselves to the Lord.

Paul urges the Corinthians to excel in this grace of giving, just as they excel in faith, speech, knowledge, and love. This is not a command but a test of the sincerity of their love. Paul points to Jesus as the great example. Though He was rich, He became poor for their sake, so that through His poverty they might become rich.

A year earlier they had been eager to give, so Paul encourages them to finish the work. A gift is acceptable according to what one has, not what one does not have. The aim is fairness. Their plenty now can supply others' need, and later others may help them. Paul is sending Titus and two trusted brothers so the gift will be handled honorably before the Lord and before people.

Excel in This Grace

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapters 8 and 9 address the collection for the poor believers in Jerusalem, a project dear to Paul's heart. He begins with the example of the Macedonian churches, such as Philippi and Thessalonica. In a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty overflowed in a wealth of generosity. They gave beyond their means, of their own accord, pleading for the favor of taking part. This was grace at work, and it began with giving themselves first to the Lord.

Paul does not command the Corinthians; he invites them to prove the genuineness of their love. The deepest motive is the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ. Though He was rich, for their sake He became poor, so that by His poverty they might become rich. The incarnation and the cross are the pattern for Christian generosity.

Paul gives practical guidance. Readiness matters more than amount, because a gift is acceptable according to what a person has. The goal is not to burden one church to relieve another but to achieve equality. Paul cites the manna in Exodus 16, where the one who gathered much had nothing left over and the one who gathered little had no lack. Finally, Paul commends Titus and two brothers appointed by the churches. He takes care to do what is honorable not only before the Lord but also before people, guarding against any suspicion in handling the gift.
